So you've been without this toilet for over 3 months?

Fitting a service valve seems to involve cutting pipes = more chance of leak than refitting end stop!
If you've already turned the water off at the mains and the pipe's drained down it's a piece of piss job to cut the pipe a bit and put on the service valve - you could even get a push fit fitting. If you turn on the mains and your cistern's not properly sealed to the pan you're going to have water everywhere. Just my opinion

[Donna single handedly destroys long held preconceptions about women and DIY.] And conversely the last time I tried something as simple as replacing the ballcock in our upstairs loo we ended up with a 1st floor fountain gushing water into the garden ("It's that classy water feature you've always wanted love" as I tried to explain to the missus) until the plumber came out smirking to put right my foolishness. I'm a lot more 4D than dporter

Me too ! Hence the reluctance to cut anything even if she is right (women are always right, so they say). Managed to decouple the cistern and put it back together on the other toilet. What could go wrong

I'm actually quite a handyman I just don't like being gung go (ever since I put a nail through the main branch pipe of the hot water tank)

I changed mine without even checking sizes. Just picked up the first one I saw in B&Q, went home and drained the cistern and swapped them over. Hope that helps

Picked up a syphon yesterday from Toolstation for £4.85 - bargain. Drained the cistern, the awkward bit is yet to be done.

My problem is bog related. I've been constipated for 2 weeks. Piles the size of a pea for almost as long. Docs put me on penecilin and juice that makes me shit through the eye of a needle. Made Doncaster Rovers an interesting game I can tell you.
