There was Jonathan Stewart who was a shit keeper but bizarrely went to Fulham and the Portsmouth after us, never played for either but strange all the same. There was also some youngster we released who went to Sheffield Wednesday but again didn't actually play so basically other than Carayol it doesn't look like we made many mistakes.
Reinforces the point that we need to improve our academy and facilities and highlights the importance of this training ground being a success when it's up and running.

How many youngsters have we released for shitness only for them to go on and make it elsewhere? I can't think of any.
Back in the days of McMahon, we picked up a couple of kids from Newbury; Scott Doe and Theo Walcott. Cannon the coach had gone to watch Doe, and noticed Walcott. Doe although released by us, is still playing at Conference level and has played well over 300 games at that or Div 4 level with D and R. When he played youth football he was a forward at some point he became a defender...I don't suppose he'd be much worse than some we've had in that time. Doe is at Boreham Wood, managed by Luke Garrard, who at 30 years of age is the youngest manager in the Conference. Probably our 2 biggest misses were Ray Barlow and Dudley Tyler, both of whom played park football in Swindon, both played in the English top flight and Barlow capped by England, neither ever on Town's books. |

James Constable, a lifelong fan, was purposely ignored by our network. When he finally appeared on our radar (admittedly we were at a low ebb during a rare, but shortlived, stint in Div 4) death threats from fans of the provincial club he played at prevented him from completing his dream move.

If thats the case then Mick Channon from Orcheston near Shrewton missed our net even though he nearly signed for us in 1978-79 under Bob Smith but that fell through and we signed David Peach instead. |

Nah, the Don was born in Paulton, Somerset, as everyone knows. Fleming was born in Downton though and qualifies.
