It has been turned into a largely centralised national chain, so very little money now spent on local journalism.  If you notice, on any day the courts report you get loads of articles, which shows they use other sources for most of the content, that and rehashing social media as they don't have local reporters to the level they used to.  It is all but a free local rag these days.

In short, hyper-local news in this country is dead. Circulation is down, ad sales are down, traditional banner ads on websites make very little.

Most titles are owned by one of 4 national/international companies, all of whom are fucked, with regional subbing and writing hubs, editors covering multiple titles and piss-poor pay for a journo grad, who not only has to have a degree, but also probably has to go through NCTJ training too, all for the lowest grad salary around.

Most people I know who graduate with a degree in journalism, or an interest in converting to journalism, end up in agencies, TV, PR.... recruitment... The whole industry is dead, and in desperate need of a revolution, but the up-take and pace of change is so slow.

This is a sincere question.. I know it's not the Sunday Times, but I imagine there are still plenty of journalism grads etc who would be happy to get the gig. I refuse to believe they can't actually spell or they wouldn't have got the job in the first place. So what is it? Tough deadlines? Because I'm sure like anyone else with a degree I've probably written thousands upon thousands of words via the power of red bull alone but I've still never written anything along the lines of "if you wasn't a footballer"

I was told at work today that my position was being made redundant. I've been offered what is essentially a demotion but on the same salary despite less responsibility. I'm not keen on all aspects of the role and I'd be working alongside people I'd previously been managing. The meeting was a "consultation" apparently and there's not been anything written whatsoever.

As I write it down it seems like a win-win situation but I can't help but feel that I'm being managed out of the business, has anything similar happened to anyone else? am I wrong to be expecting this to be communicated formally in writing with a separate job offer and spec?

Sometimes it's used to keep people you value until space frees up to out them back where they were. You should get it in writing saying what your new job title is and if they do salary ranges, what the range is. The one important thing is to get it in writing that your salary remains. One thing to check is future pay rises. They may well keep your salary the same for years until you're in step with the lower roles. You might also need to think about bonuses or allowances if they are linked to job role.
