Doesn't help that FIFA allowed Ireland to play with a message on their shirts commemorating the Easter uprising though

They are doing it regardless, apparently. I can see both sides of the argument, but I'm pleased to see the FA and SFA sticking two fingers up to FIFA. Partly because of the cause, and partly because it's FIFA.

Poppies full stop piss me off, but this FA thing is a very modern outrage - its another episode of the age of outrage.
We've played international fixtures this time of year for a long time, and on many of those occasions didn't feel the need for our players to wear armbands with poppies on.
Football, TV personalities etc and the fucking fuss that's made over whether they do or don't wear a poppy is fucking embarrassing, and the antipathy of the whole fucking point - it's a mark of respect for those who have passed while fighting for the freedom of this country, so lets be free in deciding whether individuals wear one or not.
In this specific case, FIFA are 100% correct to uphold a sensible rule.

What's the big deal about having a Poppy on a shirt? It's obviously a 'bigger' game being England and Scotland and considering the day it falls, so I can see why some people feel more sensitive.
If players want one, then let them have it on their shirt, if they don't, then the reverse applies. It's really not a big issue.

Thirdly we may be deducted points and this may lead to us not qualifying and thus avoiding the shameful charade of another tournament disaster, trebles all round!

People in this country go fucking mental for the poppy. It's a sure fire way to wind everyone up. "Muslim who's entire home and family was destroyed by the British Army refuses to sell poppy. Share if you think we should bring back the death penalty for treason" You've probably read something similar on social media somewhere. The emotion attached to it is hysteria level.

That kind of contradicts itself doesn't it?

Agreed. There is also the annual outrage that James Mclean of West Brom 'chooses' not to wear a poppy for his own personal reasons which grinds my gears a bit.

My eldest boy was a bit restless last night so I went to lie with him to help him fall asleep. Next thing I know I wake up and its 11PM. The wife didn't think to come and check on me and by now she's fast asleep in bed and I'm wide awake and can't get back to sleep. Think I managed to doze off at around 3/4am for a couple of hours.

God I hope we are, for the sheer, limitless arrogance of thinking we're different or special.

How? Everyone is free to wear a poppy or not, no? Because we live in a free society that has, over the years, been protected in lots of different ways, including people fighting wars and dying.

They are right. It's two very different things - a general point and specific point. I'm free to walk down the street with a t shirt that says Corbyn's the antichrist and Trump needs putting down, but obviously an international footballer shouldn't be able to do that in a FIFA santioned environment in the same way they're not allowed to wear platform heals or do the nazi salute.
