One of our gerbils died last night, it was getting on a bit in gerbil years so it's to be expected. Except it had an eye missing. My first thought was that one of the kids was playing a bit rough with it or something and injured it but on further investigation it seems likely that it was eaten by the remaining gerbil. Apparently, when one dies the others eat it it dispose of the corpse because a decomposing corpse is likely to attract unwanted attention from predators.

Did you not once have to fish an expired gerbil from the U-bend of a sink? If I was a gerbil I wouldn't come anywhere near your place. |

Yup, had a depressing conversation with my parents recently about death, wills, etc. However they've prepaid for funeral arrangements so one less thing for us to worry about when the inevitable happens. |
