Or the world is becoming less tolerant of racial slurs?

So what is the Beeb going to do about playing a record by some black rap artist that uses the N word?

I may be old fashioned here, but words are only offensive in the context in which they are used

And if I hear any more pontificating from the twat from the Society of Black Lawyers. . . .

Not comparable in the slightest.

The doddery old bastard from Devon shouldn't have been sacked but the fact people are challenging the use of racist words is not political correctness. It's progress.

The fella wasn't actually sacked. The BBC accepted his resignation. He offered an immediate apology and would have done so over the air. That would have been enough.

So people can pick and choose who, and when, the word is used?

And if so, who is the arbiter?

See that the loathsome Scudamore, has been caught out sending sexist e-mails, deriding women's football.

Comes at an unfortunate time really....because he's actually opposed to Dyke's proposals on B teams....I'm sure he can be persuaded to change his views in return for FA support in keeping him as the most powerful man in English football.

People are just fed up of the racism police going overboard these days.

It's generally pretty obvious when someone is being clearly racist as opposed to misinterpretations, genuine mistakes, etc

Talking of the mirrors hardon to get Clarkson sacked - I had no idea that 'slope' meant anything other than being gradient related.

Nor did I...I'm not aware that many people did. The irony is now we all know.

People take offence too easily. Racism like any other form of verbal abuse should only be taken how it is intended.
Reciting a nursery rhyme that contains a certain word or playing a song from the 1930's with the same word in it was not intended to be racist. Utterly ridiculous that it even makes the news.

I work in an area where a lot of punters are of the age and inclination to be racist. I tell them to fuck off if I hear them being so. They complain that 'it never used to be like this, it's PC gone mad' to which I reply 'It's not like that anymore, off you kindly fuck' (or words to that effect, depending on how cowardly I'm feeling). I know people who will look the other way and I can understand why they do. I don't, because I find it personally fucking deplorable and don't think society can move forwards until people stand up and say 'No, I'm not letting you get away with that.'

That said, the guy on the radio didn't deserve what he got, neither did the Mirror's succession of hate stories towards Clarkson deserve the column space. As a young guy I wasn't even aware 'slope' was an offensive term, it's so out of use. It's perhaps important to note the radio bloke wrote a letter apologising and offering to apologise live on air or 'fall on his sword', and the manager in question said he had to do the latter option. Failure in management, not racism.

Agree with people about context. Accidentally half-letting slip a word that was in the nursery rhyme you grew up singing is not racism. In the same way that talking about use of the word 'nigger' is not racism. A word on its own means bugger all, its relevance in the sentence does. "I want to kill all the badgers" is not the same as "My favorite animals are Badgers."

As someone of advancing years, the term 'doddery old bastard' for someone you have never met or heard of, before a couple of days ago, is equally offensive to those of us over 60 - public apology please  Hmmm
