Yeah, it was not a fun few hours!

It's an interesting contrast, with English being a language that was formalised from a spoken language into a written language, and German being the formal written language, that then got adopte as a spoken language.

Come on, we'll do it...what's it about (one day I'll actually be able to help someone here!)

If you're offering, I need 3000 words on the use of pamphlet literature in political discourse in early-modern England by Monday.

The World Turned Upside Down (Civil War) stuff, is that early-modern?  The Civil War was a boon for publishing, and pamphlets and so on, as was the Reformation (but I suspect you know that).

Yeah, that's the stuff... i know nothing about this era though, only doing the module because budget cuts meant they couldn't run the ones i wanted! It's a struggle; give me 18th-19th century riots and disorder any day.

Diane Purkiss - The English Civil War is a very good read, but doesn't have as much on pamphlets as I'd hoped.  It mentions the Licensing Act, and the resulting London print trade fuelling political discussion and argument, however.  Also John Lilburne could be a mine of information (apologies if I'm telling you stuff you already know).  I may be able to check out some stuff on the reformation in England tomorrow.

I expect the Levellers will be a chock full of information, probably the Quakers too.  You could try John Wycliff and the Lollards, and the Puritans produced a lot.  Again, sorry if this is stuff you already know!

You might want to check this out:

http://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/samples/cam033/2002023373.pdf

There's also a book that would be useful by Joad Raymond called "Pamphlets and Pamphleteering in Early Modern Britain". Whether you'll be able to find it this week is another matter. UEA would have it, because that's where he works, but you might have left it a bit late to sor out an ILL. But ou can get it from Amazon if it's worth £25 top you.

Thanks, I requested that Raymond book last week through ILL but it's yet to arrive (though the PDF will come in handy for the time being)

On the home stretch now - 4 assignments totalling 21,000 words, 3 exams, and I can go back to work as planned having successfully sat out the recession, the economy fully recovered, and industry crying out for ageing history graduates... oh.

Not eternal, I didn't do an undergraduate degree until I was nearly 30. Then a few years ago I did some post grad study on day release from work.

Around where I live there are a couple of streets with lots of cars parked on the sides of the road. Inevitably you will meet a car coming the other way, and some people look at you as though they are smelling an extremely bad fart. What do you want me to do, drive up the road on two wheels?
