It looks fucking offensive too. The ads I've seen make the character look mentally handicapped. Then again, they do say write what you know...
Gervais is a cunt of the highest order.
Glad its not just me then, whilst the Office was funny I do think thats because he was essentially playing himself in that and thus didn't have to think about it too much. I don't get it, we started watching one of his live DVD's and realised after about 10 minutes that actually no one in the room was watching it as it was just poor, simple offensive humour. I assume its because he is considered 'edgy' or something that he gets away with it, people like Davidson and Chubby Brown get crucified if they did some of the stuff he does which all seems to be borderline bullying of the disabled or other minority groups.

I saw the pilot and didn't find it offensive in the slightest. It's not taking the piss as many people assume it to be.

I don't care if it's offensive, I just care whether I'd enjoy it. Like Lucien says, it'd be better if he wasn't in it. It's him I can't stand, not because he offends, I just think he's an utter dick. It's why I had to stop watching An Idiot Abroad, he grates.

It's not bad, hardly side-splitting but I don't think it's trying to be. A lot of his jokes can seem offensive although I believe he normally behaves like that to show those opinions up for what they are, when he actually believes the opposite.
The character of Derek isn't taking the piss out of anyone, and is quite cleverly used on occasion to display the inadequacies of 'normal' people compared to him.

Ditto. Doubled my journey time home tonight, and my bladder nearly imploded by the time I got in

Gervais is good,Derek is crap. Cannot say i enjoyed it. Old hat and a pompous attempt at comedy based on a serious subject..........only the very best can do that and this fails miserably i reckon. That said i know people who love it so what do i know.

Derek is only a small part comedy, it's much more drama based around the care home and characters. I think he's trying to make a point about other issues rather than getting laughs.

Personally, I love just about everything Gervaiz has ever done. I've posted it on here before, but to my mind, this is one of the funniest things I have ever seen. I think it helps if you like him and/or Karl Pilkington because the humour in it comes from the fact he is obviously hugely enjoying having created the whole scenario as a means of taking the piss out of his mate.

Getting so pissed at lunch and after work that I honestly cannot remember whether or not I made it back out again later. Seems like a waste of a Friday night.
