It's a roman word 'plebian', which means 'commoner'.

I remember using it at school although it was used more in the context of 'dickhead' than anything.

Well I never knew that, cheers FH!  We used it at school too, like you for more of a dickhead alternative.

This is a complete waste of everyone's time this story, must be a very quiet news week.

I suppose it's the context.

If it was used as originally intended, as a 'commoner' or 'peasant' then coming from a Tory toff it could be considered very offensive indeed.

If it's used as in 'dickhead' though, it's nothing to be upset about.

i wonder if he'd have simply said 'commoner' instead whether anything would have been said?

What gets me is the "do you know who I am". As if chief whip is anything more than telling people "Cameron says you have to...".

Clegg lying in his manifesto, then apologising for having ever made the promise (rather than breaking the promise). That is much more of a newsworthy.

Of course we only have a policeman's word for it...and they're not always entirely honest (Hillsborough)

As soon as someone says "Do you know who I am?" I see it as a chance to end the conversation dead and to tell anyone around that the guy needs help as he can't even remember his own name.

Travel insurance - being of advancing years, I now have to answer the medical question - as soon as I mention statins it's £++++s. I don't drink or smoke, have regular medical checkups and only take the tablets because of medical history of parents & grandparents, as a precaution.

Nobody asks are you 25 stone, smoke 50 a day, have unprotected sex in Africa, support Poxford (bad for the heart, nerves and depression apparently) or anything that may cause you to be ill whilst on your hermetically sealed cruise.

The amount of police resource and air time being given to the 'missing' 15 year old girl is a bit ott.  It's not as if she's been abducted by a stranger, she's chosen to run off with the teacher (who is clearly thick and likely to end up in prison).   The authorities knew about them, which surely means the parents did?

I reckon the mum must of known, she almost seemed too embarrassed to look at the camera when appealing for her daughter to return. Maybe I've got that wrong but that's how she comes across to me.
