There used to be many more fake American accents in the music business than there are now. Maybe it's not quite so cool as it used to be?

Or perhaps that sort of stuff was more mainstream/popular and thus you heard more of it. A bit like now, a lot of UK artists with semi-authentic London accents seem to be popular and it's mostly what you hear on commercial radio and the such.
