It's meant to move over the Westcountry over the course of this afternoon, but as others have said, if it's in the upper atmosphere the sky isn't exactly going to turn black

I think that perhaps you misunderstood, their website says quite the opposite.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8621407.stm

It doesn't say it won't fall. It just says it'll dissipate. How is the cloud going to dissipate? Is the ash just going to magically vanish? It'l lose energy, and as it does the atmosphere will no longer be able to carry the ash. Not all of it will fall though, some of it will still be in the atmosphere in a few millenia.

That's laughable. Regardless of which part of the atmosphere the ash is in, the blocking of the sunlight would still cause the sky to turn black. But there probably isn't enough ash for that, so the world isn't going to end..yet.

I wasn't suggesting it would be invisible. More to do with the fact that substances in the upper atmosphere travel over a longer distance and spread out more than those in the lower atmosphere.

On a serious note though....

Apparently, the last time that this particular volcano blew its load, it did exactly what it is doing now for some 18 (eighteen) months.

I am no expert but I think that this this little episode might be bothering all of us for some time yet.

I work for the Research Councils. We're sending a plane up to check it out, they asked me if they could borrow a laptop to do some research and whether the laptop would work in an unpressurised plane...

I had no idea, but I said yes anyway Cheesy

Erm, won't it crash? Did this come out of drunken pub session between two scientists "I bet all that stuff on the news about volcano ash and planes is a load of shite". "No, mate, it's true". "Fucking isn't". "Right then, you take a plane up and see if it crashes. Dare you" "Right then I will - fucking pussies"
