Although the plans did not include a specific clause to help the town's football club, Mr Bawden said they will do "everything they can" to help them.
He did warn that the council could not bend over backwards to help them, saying their was only so much they could do.
"It is a public company and it is down to them to look after their own affairs," he said.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wiltshire/4079854.stmAlso told me no official plans had 'come across his desk yet' and that the club were currently negotiating with the professional officers at the council.

The local authority was recently ranked in the bottom 13 councils in England, and has frequently been under fire for the quality of its services. hardly surprising! on the stadium front, i just can't see it ever happening, even though we are desperate for it to happen. This idea doesn't seem to be moving forward fast enough.

It's surprising, really, that they're not doing more ... although as Mike Bawden pointed out they are a "public" company (although I thought they were limited ...) it does the council no harm to at least support them. I'm not suggesting they give them land, but developing a stadium in partnership with the club where they share the spoils is going to help both parties enourmously.

Agreed Chris. whilst STFC is a ltd company the council dont seem to understand the effect it can have on the wider community, or that a redeveloped CG could benefit anyone whos slightly interested in sport in Swindon not just STFC fans.

They will be happier when there is no club left, i feel.
Seeing all the plastic Scousers in Walkabout on Euro final night really showed just how many football following Swindonians are quite happy to watch 'their team' from afar even though they have live football on their doorsteps. If the club could entice these potential fans, more and more of the community would speak up and the council would have to listen.

Not that I can tallk because I've been to very few games in the last few years but I remember our championship season in division 2. Literally all the kids in my school started supporting Swindon overnight, buying the shirts etc. Wouldn't it be great if we could get a new stadium and get on the promotion trail. I've no doubt it would attract a fair amount of new fans

Let's not start on that one Dave, to think I was actually happy that walkabouts opening in town. now with all the mockney arsenal/chelsea fans, and fake utd/scouse fans in there I'd love it to be flattened.

This, of course, is terminolgical inexactitude for "not very much."
Still I wonder why they chose to even acknowledge the existence of an FC.......its up to people like us to bombard these Councillors with constant reminders as to why an FC is a crucial part of the towns cultural heritage, that needs looking after.
