Thanks for that china red.

It's interesting that obviously the whole point of the death penalty is to prevent others from trying... I think that's a bit wishful thinking isn't it? Then again folks being thrown in to jail should be a warning to anyone not to break the law but people still enter a world of crime.

Usually the penalties for crime here are quite harsh.

Two years ago there was a story about someone who put his bank card into an ATM, due to a problem with the machine for it  kept on giving him money, far exceeding the funds in his account.  He walked away with the equivalent of 25,000 pounds, before he had time to consider whether he should return the money to the bank or do a runner he was arrested, tried and sentenced to twenty years in prison.

Still, this place is much safer to wander the streets than in the UK

Probably. Crime in the UK has been rising massively for hundreds of years, with huge increases when they stopped executing people.

China Red, from what I understand, they have high policing in the urban areas.

But the rural people do not have any policing at all. My Dad is working with these 2 Chinese students. They said how a mad man went on a knifing spree in their village, killing a man. No Police ever came, they just had to bury the body. They have no healthcare. They focus all their social services on the areas which make the goods for export and leave the rest with nothing.

And these students arent even that poor because theyve been educated enough to come to England as Science students.

More a tragedy than anything else.  The guy was obviously a bit of a loony but I find it hard to believe for all of that erratic behaviour not one scrap of evidence could be submitted to prove a history of the old radio rentals.  The chap had a family in the UK and quite an extensive one at that.  Surely he would have been referred to a quack at some point and there within would be the required evidence to prove he was potentially a loon and get a doctor to look at him?

I also don't think we do respect cultural differences as much as we should but that is a completely different argument.  You can be pissed off if you like, no issue with that as the above is only my personal opinion.

Sorry, the "pisses me off" was a bit harsh and I meant it more in general than at you in particular.

The communist party has officials in every city, town and village, and with this a very large but largely ineffective police force to help control the population.  Usually if something is swept under the carpet like this it's because the person who committed the crime (or their family) has some kind of relationship with people in the local government or police force or pays bribes.  Corruption is a huge problem here but to be honest without it I doubt anything would get done.

I know a Cambodian here who in his own country gunned down two people with an AK47 but as his uncle is the President and his mother works in the government he has been exiled for five years and thats the end of his punishment.  So it's not just a problem here, it's rife in most Asian countries.  Saying that probably the only place without corruption in the world is Antarctica.

The other problem is that on the whole people here will believe anything they are told.  I met a group of girls last year who all believed it was possible to get pregnant by giving oral sex because one of their friends told them.  Some of the things people have told me here are incredible, that an intelligent human being could believe it beggars belief, especially things relating to politics.

How did you end up in China, if you don't mind me asking? We have someone in Russia, Thailand, and China and just find it intriguing...

Had my mid life crisis a little early.  Hit 30, didn't want to spend my entire life living in the UK.  China was probably not my first, second or even tenth choice but here I am a little over three years later.  The quality of football here is not very good, hate the food, survived an earthquake and the driving makes places like Italy and Thailand seem amazing but the people in the city I live in are for the most part great, especially considering this city is famous for its hot chicks.

China has never appealed to me and never will.

Much in part to the Chinese that I have met whom all but one of have turned out to be rude, belligerent, greedy, ignorant cunts. Just today I found myself on a speedboat with a group of them and decided to wait to be the last to get of because experience tells me that the Chinese will give little or no thought to everybody else and will push and shove to get off first, well in this case their reputation was certainly deserved as some poor unexpecting chap nearly took tumble into the water after a side swipe from some dick who just couldn't wait his turn.
