I think people take diving too seriously. Unfortunately it's part of the game nowadays, regardless of how much some dislike it and however unprofessional it might be.

If it doesn't envolve someone playing our team i find it funny. If one of our team dives and we get something from it, i'm not embarrassed, but smug and amused. If i was a Liverpool fan i'd be glad he dived and be quite happy. Regardless, good dive i say. Clap

Please tell me you're joking Barry.

Accepting diving as just a part of football is like accepting Franchise as just a part of the Football League.

It's completely disgusting and needs sorting out.

Yes and no. I don't like diving, but what do i get for disliking it? Nothing. So embrace it and feel the amusement i say.

I'm not saying it should be part of the game, just saying that like it or lump it it is, so why not see the good it has to offer?

If you were a 'puel fan would you be talking about how disgusting it was he dived or how glad you are to have gained a point?

someone mentioned this in the pub at the time. i thought that in this case, it would be obstruction rather than a foul, but therefore an indirect free-kick rather than a penalty. fuck knows if that is even close to being right though

I remember something similar happening a few years back. I think Seamen dived at Owen's feet, Owen jumped over and there was no contact but Own went down (wasn't a dive, just couldn't stay on his feet). Ref gave the penalty and Seamen was fuming as he didn't touch him, but the consensus afterwards was that it was the right decision (I think). The ref definitely said even though there wasn't contact it was a penalty.

Diving obviously needs to be stopped but there is a difference between an outright dive and where a player goes over in the process of avoiding what would have been a foul. I still maintain that if Ngog hadn't jumped it would have been a blatant foul and a penalty so I don't think whether he dived or not is an issue.

What about if he hadn't dived, but instead stumbled as a result of the jump and then went down - but again with no contact. Would that be a penalty?

I concur.

In cases where a player jumps a tackle in order to avoid being fouled, but due to the way he's had to jump his momentum has caused him to fall, should be a penalty. Ngog's dive isn't one of these cases though.

Ngog could easily have stayed on his feet, his momentum did not make him fall over.

robbie fowler said no no it wasn't a penalty though and the ref, despite being many more yards away than the chap who fell over said of course it is

from this i think we should just cull all refs

I fucking hate divers. They should be banned retrospectively for three games for bringing the game into disrepute. There is precedent for it as well. Mikolunis got banned for his dive to win Lithuania a penalty against Scotland.

And as for Ngogs being a penalty, if there is no contact in cant be a foul!

If a scotch player earned a penalty by diving and that penalty got you into the World Cup Finals, you wouldn't be saying that.

I know it would never happen, as scotland will never get that close to a World Cup Finals.

Diving is part of the game and has been forever. It's highlighted more now because of the tv coverage. If they're caught by the ref they should be carded, nothing else.

There's a very real danger of sanitising football so much that it becomes like any other sport. One of the things that makes football the greatest game on Earth is the talking points and debate that surrounds every game played, together with the blind bias of supporters for, or against particular decisions.

And that's the way I like it.
