I wonder how much of that was upfront and how much is/was instalments and/or performance related clauses?

Transfer fees are very rarely just straight up transfer fees these days

Ok, exaggeration but the point stands.
Charlton fans at the time suggest it was £100k up front plus add ons, no idea how true that is, but for me thats too much money up front.

Who knows how these deals are worked out though really.

Went to watch Banbury v Scarborough today good atmosphere and great non league football. Harry Parsons on the bench due to not playing midweek, came on after half time and changed the game scoring a cracking winner. Think this loan is working well for him.
