The alternate time line in season 6 was purgatory, they all went there when they died - Jack died in the final episode whilst Ben and Hurley lived for some time afterwards for example. I was fine with all that, but they left so many unanswered questions about the island that it spoilt it and made the whole thing feel like a massive waste of time. They didn't have to explain everything but they should have done a whole lot more than they did.
As DMR said, what was the point of bigging up Des when all he did was nearly destroy the island? Incredibly they even raised some new questions - if the island was so important why did Jacob want Des there as a fail safe to destroy it if necessary and why wasn't Jack affected by the massive magnetic field in the light that shook even Des?

I don't think i'm going to bother watching the last 2 episodes then. Just reading what others have put, is making me feel like a cunt for giving up and restarting again. Clearly the thick yanks, who seemed to come up with a great series, completely lost the plot and showed their true colours. Imagination is fuck all without brains.

They all died in the plane crash in episode 1. The way I read it was that the Island was deaths waiting room, but before they could pass over to heaven, hell or wherever you go, their spirits had to meet up again in purgatory, which was the alternative reality that they all created and has been regularly shown in season 6. So basically, everything that has happened on that Island didn't happen in reality, it happened in their own little world. Pointless for 6 years of TV I know, but I enjoyed it. There are many unanswered questions though. |

No, they didn't die in the plane crash. The island was all real which is why it's so fucking annoying that they didn't explain what exactly the island is. The flash sideways shown in S6 was the 'purgatory'.
