Oh come on. The context and history in which a term is used obviously has a bearing. Would you seriously try and claim that for example there is a direct comparison to be made between the term "ginger" and the word "nigger"? Nigger comes from the Latin word for black, niger, but it is still widely and rightly recognised as an offensive and derogatory term when used by white people towards black people. And that offense is compounded because it comes with a history of decades of racist abuse, discrimination, violence and murder. The same goes with the term "Paki" - you use that term toward an Asian and it carries with it whole swathes of connotations, not from 40 years ago, but in the here and now. I don't remember reading about any of Ironside's BNP mates doing time for firebombing churches and scrawling "Gingers out" on the wall first. You know that's the context of what's being discussed here, so stop being so obtuse - as Ben says, you're just making yourself look stupid.

I'm saying that the meaning of a word isn't necessarily the same as it's origins. The word paki clearly comes from a shortening of Pakistani, but that doesn't mean it's picked up different meanings through it's usage. Edit. I got beaten to my own response! Paul's was better anyway.

Magic, are you seriously suggesting that you'd quite happilly walk up to a stranger in the street and call him a Paki? Because that what your opinion would suggest.
And your argument for gingers doesn't wash. Yes, you don't like it and it can be seen as discriminatory, but the same could be said for someone calling me a fat cunt and the law allows it. Calling someone a Paki on the other hand is racial discrimination, which is a criminal offence.

You can not agree all you want, but a word's which main use is an offensive term based on the race of someone, with added bonus points of a history of being used as part of discrimination and hate based on race, is in fact, racist.
So you're still wrong.

It's a derogatory term based on a person's race - what part of "racist" do you not understand exactly?
