Just found out one of my old mates from school is the lino for the Hartlepool game tomorrow, it's his first football league appointment so could be 'interesting'. Being ginger he's doomed from the start.....

The ref should make him wear a hat, womens flowery one would do, he'd probably get less stick if he makes a balls up.

Some years back I met a fella through work, who was a league lino. I asked him why he was a lino rather than a ref...his answer surprised me.

At the time it seemed when you started at grass roots, say refereeing for Wilts FA, then if you stayed with them all well and good but if you moved to a new area, say Yorkshire, then you had to start again, which held back your progress up the levels...so he decided he could get involved in league football at lino level, but had missed out on reffing, through having to move around with work.

I'm sure it must be a bit different now...that was in the last Century..20th not 19th.

I was having a chat with one of my old work mates last week who started reffing when he was a teenager, now a Championship level ref and doing well for himself.  He's only mid-20's so it looks like he'll be premiership at some time, fair play to the lad.

He once reffed one of our Wilts League matches about 10 years ago and you could tell he wasn't the normal standard of referee, very composed for such a young lad.

Be good to see him in charge of a televised match some day.
