I often used to think of refs as people who wanted to be players but weren't good enough. Don't know how much truth is in that...

That's pretty much the reason I was intending to give it a go.

Fair enough. Its people who just want to be involved I guess.

It tends to be a job where you get quite a lot of criticism and not that much praise though doesn't it?

I used to be a pretty poor goalkeeper, I'm used to that bit!

All my sons qualified as level 8 refs aged 14 years, good rate of pay for a couple of hours work each weekend and they were able to request that abusive parents/adults, ( who on occasions ruined my sons enjoyment of junior football as players), leave the pitch side.

tom jones reffed my sunday league team a couple of times in the mid 90's.he was very good.
imagine mike riley, andy durso etc getting picked for teams at school?
i think they are prime exapmles of people who love the game but would more then likely be useless at it

Im with you on that.

To run around a muddy field on a sunday morning, in the middle of winter, getting abused by hungover gobshites is not my cup of tea. I can just come on here and get that   Bye

Or be a League referee and run round a field on a Saturday afternoon being abused by thousands of still drunk gobshites.

I remember that, the FA had some sort of initiative to get ex players in as refs..I saw Jones do some games and thought he was distinctly average. Which is why perhaps he never got further with it.

I once saw a documentary about David Elleray....it was contrasting his life as a Harrow school master and top ref...most interesting was the fact that as a kid he used to be a fan of refs and didn't follow a team...he showed scrapbooks with stories in about refs. They're a strange breed.

the lad I know was called Sam lewis and was the lino in front of the don rogers stand, he had a mare of a second half. I've sent him a message asking why he didn't have the bottle to at least try and point out to the ref it should be an indirect free kick if anything

it was pretty colourful but if I find out it was outside the box for sure then I'm gonna have a proper 'chat' as it becomes an almighty and costly fuck up by Sam.... not that it'll change anything but at least I might get to hear the refs explanation
