Are you sure Houllier has passed away? Just I recall John Sheridan mentioned he was 6 weeks away from a return to management...

Top manager. Really started the transformation of bringing Liverpool back to the fore (he probably should have won a title with them in 2001 and 2002 (had he not fallen ill). Starting by changing the player culture to a more professional one. I think when he came in players/characters (twats) like Ruddock & Ince were still there and were the voices that were often wrongly listened to. Bringing in 'keeper Jerzy Dudek in 2001 was a masterstroke, a player who would go on to become a world class 'keeper - especially noted in the 2005 CL Final.

Houllier recognised there needed to be a shift that focused on talent rather than beer swilling, kebab eating cunts if Liverpool were going to start winning a more major trophy (League Title/European Cup). He duly did achieve that and I don't think anyone, could take away the 2000/1 season; winning nearly everything including the Europa League (UEFA Cup) but for that elusive Top flight title. The following season despite having a heart attack, he came back to manage them to a 2nd place finish.

Although it ended a bit sour, he had built a squad and instilled a new culture that Benitez continued. Most of Houlier's squad were those that went on to win the Champions League (European Cup) in 2005.

Sleep well.

A legend at the Club, and a brilliant manager, winning the League Cup Twice, the League in 1983, getting to the European Cup Semi Finals in 84 and the UEFA Cup final in 87. They had some very talented players in those days.

Mike Sutton, former Norwich City and Carlisle player, also father of Chris and John.  Another player died of dementia, but not so high profile to grab the sports headline writers attention.
