On all the Sky literature it states you need a BT line.

You dont. only uses the bt line for ordering things on box office i think (??)

My sky + works fine with no phone line at all plugged in

You defo do not need BT line for Sky or Sky+.  I believe you do need it for mulitroom though.  This is fact btw.  You do get an extra charge for a "manual" installation (the geezer has to phone up Sky and kind of switch it on from their end instead of through the phone line) and you can still order box office films without a phone line, you just have to call them up.

Yeah as we have multiroom we have to keep both plugged in to the BT, I think it may be summut to do with that, I have only just chucked the letter away or I would scan it and put it on here, the wording was very strict that I had to have it plugged into a BT landline at all times.

Technically you do need it plugged in to a land line for 12 months to satisfy the interactive discount part of the contract, even for singlebox installs. However as Jan says they don't normally chase you on a single room install - however they may refuse to install I suppose.

But I thought (and am probably wrong) that this was plugged in to ANY land line/provider, not just restricted BT.  So you'd be OK with Virgin or whoever. It may be a pain for VOIP providers though.

You dO need a "BT" line for their ADSL broadband though.

I'll have a dig anyway, but you are probably right Herthab.

It's the multiroom issue that Sky are worried about with JJ, that's why they would disconnect if he doesn't plug it back in.

As long at installation you tell them you don't have a phone line, they will charge you £25 extra for installation and not bother you once up and running.

And aren't all landlines technically BT lines, the other companies just rent the line from BT as it were, the actual link to your house is provided by BT?  So that's why they say you have to have a BT landline.  Not 100% sure on that though.

I wasnt 100% sure but it probably is the multiroom issue as you say, as its easy to run a cable to next door then they get all the channels for only £10 a month.....mmmm interesting idea...mmmmm if I charge him £30 a month he will get all my channels for half the price he would normally and I get my whole package paid for!

legal disclaimer....nice Idea but I aint got the balls to do it!

Of no interest now:

Anyway,as long as you have any FIXED line (not VOIP) you should be OK.

So if you have mutiroom why do the boxes need to be plugged into a phone line?

What difference does it make?

My multiroom boxes have never been plugged in since the first day of having it. The sky bloke made a mess with the phone line.

but once you get Sky+ you wonder how you ever lived without it

Miss angry they wanted the same thing from me but managed to recommend a friend - ring up and threaten to disconnect and they will normally sort you out

Or disconnect and reconnect in a different name and get it all free - I've got the full package and am sorely tempted to phone and cancel sports & movies, but I'd miss the sports so I may cancel the movies and make the mrs go without  - unless they offer it me free

Anyone know if Sky Broadband is reliable ?
