I understand its all financial these days but the level of reserve football is poor in comparison these days, in the past it was, well seemingly at the time, a much higher standard with teams playing good football and many players were blooded for years in the reserves before making the league bow, but as you say its all so rushed now.
Players in the past like Mushy Page who had a lot of promise but in about 4 years never played in the first team (unless I am mistaken) but scored huge amounts of goals at reserve level, 25+ in one season and always 15+, which in the days of only 30 or 32 games wasn't bad.
Carmello Gallo was another one tipped for great things in the reserves due mostly to his wonderful footwork, which at a lower/youth level was fantastic, but put him in a game with fit/strong/athletic/professional players he looked totally lost.

Couple of good names there....Gallo was a ball juggler, I seem to remember he put on a show before a LC final or something similar..somehow you expect someone with that level of abilty with a ball to at least be some use in a game.

yeah Gallo was a product of the good old St Joes school team and had loads of abilty but just useless in a game, looked like Maradonna, small, rotund and shortish black hair. Great ball skills. If he could tackle, pass and had some pace he would have been a good footballer . Mushy Page though went into local non league football with Penhill I think. Apparently he was not a good trainer so wasn't picked for the first team. I hope we can get some good local talent coming through the ranks again. These 2 not being good examples I am aware!

Going back a bit, I recall going to a reserve fixture v Birmingham in 63, when the gate was 5,494..we won 4-2 and a cracking good game it was. From memory, this was in the big freeze of that year, and because of so many postponements, we put out a strong X1, hence the bigger than usual crowd. Don Rogers was stepping up from the youth team and caused a bit of excitement, scoring a couple in this game.

It used to be quite a steady way to get players...for example Rod Thomas came from Gloucester City and Mossy from Witney Town...2 seriously good players. I suppose both took a while to get up to speed playing reserve football etc...doubtless the old Football Combination was a much better testing ground than the pointless reserve stuff we have today.
Fitzroy Simpson would count, though pretty much the same era as Gordon and Wade.

My Dad was on schooboy terms at that point and used to get Buckley to pick him up for training, he also played for St Jose around that time, most of the 60's and into the 70's. He later went on to work for Arnold D'Arcy.

It's all about the money. In today's football and the economic climate, money doesn't just talk it positively shouts. No matter what clubs say to fans, there are always deals to be done.believe me.It all depends if the buying club is prepared to meet the asking price and then the contract offer to the player. The best manager that i played for, always says to me when we discuss any clubs chances for the coming season, "How much has the chairman given to the manager?" He's said this for 30 yrs! Btw,this isn't a dig at Fitton. As much as i really want STFC challenging at the top of L1 and back as an established Championship side,i'm now of the view that when people ask me about STFC, i laugh and say,"Same old Swindon, nothing much changes". It hurts because i want us to do so well, but i'm not going to worry myself to death about the club anymore.

No doubt he would want a fair wedge, but would be a good signing none the less. But as I said I dont think that bloke posting on 606 actually knows anything more than anyone else.
