The modern game is too complicated and no reason why you can’t play 442 with two wingers in midfield who can push up

Name me a good attacking wing back that was good defensively? At this level its rare you get a wing back that can do both, because if they can, they are not still in league 2!

So with 3 cb's i'd rather my wing back can attack, as i dont want 5 defenders on the pitch

Or just don’t play with wing backs, play with conventional full backs  otherwise those three centre backs are going to be put under a hell of lot of pressure for the rest of the season. It worked under Wellens well and I can’t remember too much of a need for wing backs there.

What is the point of wings back then if they can’t defend and can only go forward, just play with wingers or wide midfielders . Also pretty sure Snowdon isn’t a wing back by trade, he’s a midfielder who can also play wing back

Other than being outnumbered in central midfield in every game we play throughout the season you mean?

It’s 10 v 10 outfield players just adjust accordingly if the plan isn’t working.

"Adjust accordingly"? Otherwise known as not playing 442.

Just like any formation it’s open to change depending on how the game is going.

But the formation, if you want to avoid the square peg in round hole problem dictates your team selection.

If you play 442 your midfield includes two wide players and if you want to avoid midfield overload one of them gets pulled in narrow all the time, and is generally a bit shit at it.

Or you do what England did throughout the 90s and stick a succession of CM players out wide and wonder why they look rubbish.

442' is a great formation when you're out of possession, which is why almost all the sides that play 433 or 4231 tend to fall into it when the lose the ball. But, crucially, the teams that do that keep their wide players wide and central players down the middle. Both 433 and 4231 have 3 players in the middle in and out of possession.

It ends up more of a 4411 I guess without the ball but you keep 3 in the middle and double up on defending wide areas with wide players in front of full backs

We had no midfield at all on Tuesday, every time we cleared it it came straight back at us.
We bypassed the midfield totally

It's not a million miles off the Flitcroft season - where we only had two central midfielders and aimed to bypass them (Dunne and Linganzi - likely one of our worst midfields in terms of on the ball technique).  His team were awful to watch, but you could see the idea - get it forward and then see if four forward players could score some goals.  I think this team is a bit better than that technique wise, but the evidence is that it can be just as bizarre to watch.  It looks bereft of any flow when watching.   Holloway's recruitment certainly seems to support it.

I agree that’s what it looks like, but I don’t think that’s the plan. If it was, we’d have more physical centre mids, and we wouldn’t have stitched the pitch!
