Anyone know what type of midfield Benson is?

Think I've been at that point with Cotterill since about September. Would much rather see the likes of Alston & Gonzalez get game time ahead of him. Especially given the fact we now have a bit of a safety net points wise.

I know it's a commonly used term and it's been around for years but I always think that by definition, every midfield player should be 'box to box'...midfield essentially is the area between boxes unless I'm missing something...

I've seen Critchlow being linked again, have our 'scouts' been reading through 2021/22 season programmes again ?

I’d say it’s the terminology.

Yes, all midfielders should play between the boxes but box to box for me indicates they track back & do the dirty work but also get forward & chip in with goals & assists.

For example I’d always say Roy Keane was box to box at Manchester United, certainly in his earlier days.
However, Paul Scholes was never a box to box midfielder. He played mostly in the final third in his heyday & in his latter years he played ‘quarterback’ from inside his own half but never did both at the same time.

Obviously reading between the lines here, but he's basically been unused at Barnsley and had a good spell at Grimsby back in 2020 under Holloway. Given I'm not sure we have a proper recruitment team in place after Russell went up north, we are probably reliant a little on Holloway's history books. Out of contract at the end of the season, good age etc, worth a 6 month trial to prepare for next season now we don't appear to be going down.

Assuming we're giving Holloway a new contract of course. We have to hope, talking about history that the Grimsby episodes aren't repeated but he's probably earned another year contract based on current performance.

Cottrell back to Swansea then:

"There could be one swap but it probably won't happen. I have something lined up as one of our loans might go back. If that does happen then good luck to the lad that goes back but we have someone lined up".

Interesting who the swap might be...

This probably isn't going to be worded very well but Cotterill appears to be too technical a player to thrive under Holloway. IH is fairly old school and relies on energetic teams looking to play football in the 'right areas'. It's not just about being Old school Wimbledon and lashing it forward as much as possible as we have busy players in Kilkenny and Ofoborh who are able to create thugs in midfield. I do find that the way Cotterill plays is almost like you would imagine he might play for Swansea under 23s. Quite slow tempo etc. He looks after the ball fairly well, but never appears to be in any great rush. Possibly the sign of a good footballer, but not really someone who will thrive in the 2025 Ian Holloway Swindon team.

With that said, it wouldn't surprise me if his next loan spell he thrives in perhaps a more technical side.
