The fact that we have repeatedly been linked with, and had on trial this lad over the last 3 years just proves the problem. This is not a Holloway fresh look at what he can bring in. This is a CK model says this guy (and whoever his agent probably is). The people facing the supporters may change, but the truth is nothing has changed.

14 G/A in 2470 minutes last season, goal contribution every 180 minutes isn’t horrific.

It's about who, if anyone, he replaces. Marginal gains may be enough.
Nothing in the stats to get excited about at all. But we are skint and the third worst team in the EFL. Expectations are too high.

In a good Mansfield side as well. The more i look at this signing the worse it gets.
Nichols isn't really a prolific striker. 1 in 5 according to Wiki (110 in 511) i believe he's more of a Butterworth type player rather than a Harry Smith. On the very few occasions I've seen him I've always thought he was technically pretty good and a clever player. I'm reasonably confident he'll do ok, but as with any signing, nobody really knows how it's going to work out. We do have a reasonable recent record with loan forwards to be fair.

And also, if we're looking to add experienced players to the squad, we're simply not going to be able to bring in players that historically have scored buckets of goals. Our options are untried strikers from Prem/Championship sides (not an option as too young) or experienced players out of favour. I do think we could do a whole lot worse than Nichols (I'm bound to be proved wrong, and it bothers me not)
And he's linking up again with Clarke, that can't be a bad thing?

All that “my people are looking at signings for me” and we’ve landed our first signing on someone we’ve been linked to umpteen times over the past years.

Yeah, it seems a sensible, pragmatic signing. But not sure "guy to play off Harry Smith who runs about a bit but doesn't score goals" was the obvious weakness in our squad

I may be wrong but i would hazard a guess in the last 4 seasons Drinnan still has a better goal return than Nichols
Expect he is Thsimangas replacement rather than Drinan though.

Would leave us with five strikers plus Ameen if Tshimanga is staying, I'd suggest it's bad news for Paul Glatzel.
Would prefer to keep Glatzel over Tshimanga every day of the week and twice on Sundays

On last season's form, absolutely, but Glatzel has been dreadful all season. One goal in 1,103 minutes. Tshimanga has three in 1198, Drinan two in 1212 (league only). Fair to say none of them have been good, but Drinan at least does other stuff apart from score goals. Suspect it'll come down to whether we are able to terminate Tshimanga's loan unilaterally, it may come down to Peterborough. Reminds me of Jephcott a few years ago where Plymouth (?) weren't actually keen to allow the recall. Mildly interesting minutes thing: Freckleton is still our seventh highest league minutes, despite having barely featured since Kennedy left. Wright has a *lot* more than anyone else: https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/159/Show/England-Swindon

Is that even allowed? No way Khan comes back if it is.

We could do a lot worse than Nichols, even if his goal scoring record isn't great. He's better than Drinnan, Glatz and Tshimanga.

This isn't mean to be a "bollocks" reply, but what makes you say that? Any factual information would be preferable to my wiki stats/forum trawling. Personally I can't recall seeing him play. And he may be a Doyle or a Jeffcot. I'm not dismissing him at all. Though I am not expecting the 2016 Exeter Nichols.

Jake Young has scored 1 goal in just 12 games for Stevenage and Kemp is hardly prolific. It goes to show that someone doesn't succeed in League 1, there is a noticeable gap now to League 2, where there perhaps wasn't not long ago. It is quite possible that Nichols does well here. We are beggars and cannot nowadays be choosers (one of our many reasons for protest...but that is another story). I am sure club comms will put him forward as the new messiah and run reels of goals from 8 years ago - we know it is a punt, but there is more chance he'll improve us than not.
