Delaney resigns for Newport on a free.
And within weeks is the best defender in the division and the source of much readjustment in opinion of his Town efforts. See also: MacDonald, Angus

No way. Delaney might get fitter but he isn't going to get faster

He had a decent game yesterday other than being beaten for pace on at least 3 occassions, 1 nearly led to a goal barring a good save by Barden. His heading has improved but hes as slow as a slug.

Having some pace next to him like Sobowale certainly helps.
Delaney still seems half a yard off the pace at times but he is very vocal and tries to organise those around him. There's a lot to be said for that.
Big selection headache saturday now.

All I can say about Delaney is I prefer him to Hall. If we are going to play a high press he doesn't fit the system imo.

JR's voice note on LSPod was interesting on Delaney being the vocal organiser of the back four which helped the others.
Sobowale and Wright are much more convincing as actual "actions" defenders, but you can see the argument for not playing them together as neither are leader/organiser types and defending is as much about structure as it is actual tackling. Ideally we need one of Hall/Delaney to get something like form to play with one of the other two (or both with Sobowale at RB).

Makes you wonder if Will Wright is a bit of a luxury player when we are in the position we are in.
Yes, in a good side who dominate the ball he's one of the better centre backs in this league.
But when we are shit, I do wonder if his spot is up for grabs. He's been ever present this season (not missed a minute) and we've shipped goals like you wouldn't believe.
Perhaps a role in midfield?

What you mean once we’ve got him fit. That would piss me off - we need him for next season’s promotion charge.
On last nights evidence Delaney isn't charging anywhere....

Perhaps a role in midfield?
He looked really poor when he was pushed into a DMC position twice earlier in the season TBH, I agree he SHOULD be ok in that role but in practice he looked very poor there.

Clarke seemed to fill that role well, if he can stay fit for longer than 5 mins

I think Clarke being in a Libero Grande/ a very deep DMC role would work and I think him and Wright alongside each other in a ''normal'' CB pairing helps Wright {as it does Minturn if playing a CB three}. But it somewhat weakens the midfield, ideally you want Okafor in CDM but I don't think he can do several ninety mins on the bounce, so his minutes have to be managed. That kind of means that Clarke probably should be playing further up field {even if it is in a traditional CDM position}. I still think McGurk should be given minutes of substance for a run of games in the free role or number ten. About thirty mins for ten games on the bounce, then you can see where he's really at. Giving him fifteen mins in the piss pot trophy is a bit of an insult and we just hasn't been given enough game time to judge. Hell, Freckleton had hundreds of mins and we knew he was wank from the get go. Any road... I think Smith will be sold for about 125k in Jan. He'll reach 15 goals before being sold end of Jan but won't be replaced as the club will say the transfer came as a surprise to them {obviously Anthony Hall, will be nonplussed and ask ''oo is this 'arry smiff?''}. I would say the key Jan acquisition would be a proper experienced CB. James Tompkins and Michael Hector are without clabbs
