We shall see. I think Charlie is noticeably poorer than he was last season though. Age has just caught up with him.

I must admit, I've been surprised by how poor Charlie has looked this season. Struggling to put my finger on exactly why.

Last season he was prolific when he was here - just liked you thought he would be. This season, far from it, and completely overshadowed by Jake Young.

Maybe if he's asked to play a different role he'll be able to get back to his old self again. It's hard to believe he's got that much worse in less than a year.

Exactly that Rob. It is self explanatory really.

At his age now he is (was) being asked to do more around the pitch than he ever has before and with no room even for a rest or the luxury of being subbed early  i find it mad. That said his numbers are still up there with the Likes of Andy Cook, Mullin McGoldrick. Really not as bad as some may make out

The problem is he isn't actually the best of footballers and finds himself having to drop deep etc to bring others into play when ideally as you say he is left up top

I think Charlie is suffering from having to play too many games and having to work harder in those games than he should really have to. If you compare his goalscoring output per games it's lower (league games only)

Cook - P24 scored 11
Mullin - P19 scored 10
Mcgoldrick - P24 scored 11
Austin - P28 scored 7

It's not really his fault that his goal output has waned. I don't think he has been managed particularly well, I have a feeling we might play more to his strengths under Gunning.

Also - we're getting very off thread here - might be worth giving the mods something to do for once Wink

Personally I was unconvinced about signing him last season (partly because he must soak up a lot of the playing budget), but to be fair to him, I think a big part of the problem this season is that Charlie has had to play pretty much every minute of every game, so he has become more tired / less effective as the season has progressed, particularly in the periods when we were playing Saturday/ Tuesday/ Saturday.
I suspect when he came, he thought he would be being rotated / have back up so he could be subbed after 70 mins (there were a number of games in the Morris era where from our seats we saw him come towards / indicate to the bench he needed to come off, and the board went up shortly afterwards).
This season, the squad size and composition has meant he / we haven’t been able to do that and the result has been that at times he’s looked exhausted. (Compare the Williams/ Gladwin rotation in the Garner season where that enabled us to get a lot out of both players).

Austin is suffering with exactly the same thing that happened to Matty Taylor in his 2nd season, the legs just wont do what the head wants anymore.

I agree he has not been rotated enough. To the point that some people i go to games with have questionned if there is something behind the scenes as to why he is picked everyweek? Would he be a real bad apple if not picked?

I still remember the Notts County away game, i think we had Bradford the next week and we knew Young couldn't play that week, so playing RHM and Young made sense against Notts, but nope Charlie started again, even though he had to play the next week!

Anyway. Is Kemp returning a la Doyle beyond the realms of possibility?By all accounts he's not playing well and it would surely be in MKD interests to rebuild his saleability if nothing else?

Shall we change the thread title to ‘ More of the same that’s discussed elsewhere plus a bit about only naming players who left who might come back based upon gloom and doom mongering’

Well, nobody else can play him this season.

Not playing well, but playing. Can't see it, though we've got budget left* so maybe we'll do a Doyle/Yates with Kemp and a 'priced out the market' Young Smiley.

I think Austin would have been more prolific coming of the bench for the last 20 mins- like the Aldershot game, unfortunately our shit squad depth hasn’t allowed this

Think that was probably the original plan however as you’ve already said, circumstances don’t allow.

Austin hasn't been as productive as last season in terms of goals per game. Last season he had the 4 at Rochdale which helped his stats.

This year he has missed chances but also been unlucky where he has hit the woodwork or the keeper pulled off a save and Kemp or Young scored the rebound like at FGR and Mansfield at home.
