Shall we change the thread title to ‘ More of the same that’s discussed elsewhere plus a bit about only naming players who left who might come back based upon gloom and doom mongering’

I suspect that Gunning is his own man as the expression goes.

We'll see on Saturday if he manages to eke more of the squad than Flynn did.
Simplification & a formation change might help with that.

Well, Wakeling coming back is not an unreasonable transfer rumour (or speculation) & there will be debate off of the back of that.

Amazes me still the stick Austin is getting. In the top 15 for goals and assists this season despite our position and being asked to play the way he is

Nobody has stopped to think that maybe Minturn would want to sign for 'Boro,  a championship team who's coaching would be better that ours and he would earn more and be at a much bigger club - and have the opportunity to play championship football.

He is bound to have his head turned - and it would be up to stfc to negotiate a decent up front fee with add on's and a sell on for him to sign for them.

Being the penalty taker helps a bit on the goals front

I'd like to unpick the second part of that 'being asked to play the way he is'? What do we mean by that?

(We should probably have a subject under the players section to discuss current players, as opposed to doing it in transfer rumours)

Oooh. limited possible ITK.  I believe he is alluding to the fact he is being asked to get about the pitch and support more, rather than what he would like to do himself, and just play right up top with zero need to press/get back.  I think Austin's belief is he should have been asked to get in the box more and balls played in sooner to him.  That's all Hearsay, but I do know a person!

Can we play with a player that offers nothing, other than he may be able to get onto something in the box? Maybe, but i would say his conversion of chances this season has been terrible, he used to be great at taking chances, now he is average.

If you are only average at taking chances, then can we justify reducing the obligations that would be on other players? I don't think so personally.

Sadly in my opinion, his time has come and gone. If his name was not Charlie Austin, a lot of people here would think very differently i suspect.

Exactly that Rob. It is self explanatory really.

At his age now he is (was) being asked to do more around the pitch than he ever has before and with no room even for a rest or the luxury of being subbed early  i find it mad. That said his numbers are still up there with the Likes of Andy Cook, Mullin McGoldrick. Really not as bad as some may make out

The problem is he isn't actually the best of footballers and finds himself having to drop deep etc to bring others into play when ideally as you say he is left up top

Ignoring the rest, yes. See Nicky Ajose.

Yeah i agree with the principle. I just disagree Austin is good enough at converting chances to justify it. He used to be, but he isn't this season. There have been so many games where he has missed easy chances he would have taken a few years ago.

He doesn't justify being given the luxury of doing nothing but being in the box.

I think you need to reavulate what you think we are going to get in to replace him.

If we had a board fully backing a manager and we had a complete squad overhaul then yes i totally get looking elsewhere but good luck if you think this January window we will be going out and getting something close to the original Charlie Austin. Fingers crossed we get lucky like we did with young

Yeah we are never going to get the original Charlie, i don't expect that.

I'm just suggesting that you can have someone who converts as few chances as the current Charlie does, but still offers more about the pitch. Therefore Austin does not justify a reduced luxury role.

Interestingly, I think Gunning used Austin the way he wants to be used in his little spells previously, and Austin scored.
