Michael Flynn on Kokolo:

Williams is in with us. I am fully aware of the things on social media and the reports of what he was accused of. I am also aware he was acquitted in two and a half hours. I have spoken to a lot of people who have worked with him and know him. He is here.
There are loads of things I can go into and the politics. We are a democracy that found him not guilty. I don't condone rape, let's get the elephant out of the room. It is a disgusting crime and I can firmly say that if he had been found guilty then he wouldn't be here. I have to be mindful of the victims who haven't had justice, but there are those who have had their names tarnished by false claims. I understand the reaction, I don't always have the same view as others. The bottom line is he was cleared and I am not in a position with a court of law.

He is just training with us at the moment and I am doing thorough background checks. I understand this. There is my reputations, the club's, the fans who are at the heart and soul of the club. We must remember this is a young man with a family who has been acquitted. I was brought up to believe in innocent until proven guilty.
Personally, I thought that was a very good response from Flynn.

I’d be careful talking about false claims/accusations… something being not proven beyond a reasonable doubt does not mean the accusation was false. Just like it doesn’t mean he is innocent. In a crown court, based on the evidence given, the jury *could not be certain* that he did it. That’s the instruction given.

‘I’ll be bringing in the right characters in January’

Seems to knock the no money theory on the head.

You've only cherry picked what he actually said though -

"I think we are playing some unbelievable football, we are a little bit too easy to score against. We need to be more clinical in both boxes. The amount of chances we create every game is some of the most I have been involved in. Some of the lapses need improving and if it doesn't I will be bringing in the right characters in January."

I agree though, his statement suggests he has flexibility in January.

He goes on to say -

"I wouldn't assume anything. I try not to do it. I think the players we have here, added with a few more can give us a real chance and then build something for the following seasons. There are a few here that won't be in my plans, you have to phase that out and get the players you want. That never happens in one window, it takes three or four unless there is an endless pot of money. We are not in the bracket, but we think we are in a good place."

He seems happy enough with his budget. Let's hope he can bring it what he needs in January, I think we can all agree on that.

But can he only bring in new players in January when Kemp and Young are recalled freeing up a large chunk of budget?

Could Not Be Certain was not the verdict thiought was it.

The verdict was Not Guilty so, under the tennet of Innocent unless proven Guilty........

... Still doesn't make the claims against him false, just unproven in a court of law, unfortunately like a lot of rape cases...

It’s up to the player to now knuckle down keep out of any future trouble and to restart his career.

Absolutely, but how do you tell the difference between guilty and innocent other than through the law?

Or rather, should someone be treated as guilty after being found innocent as the stats show the probabilities in general lie that way.

A bit of a headache for the club.

The playing record on the other hand, not great. But everyone gets a chance right?

Why does Michael Flynns quote make it sound like there was doubt about whether he was pro-rape

This is where the legal system and rape cases falls flat on its arse (not to say I have any ideas to make it better).

Ultimately the only recourse is the courts which has happened here, but there is still the outcome as we are experiencing here that neither side has got a solution that they wioll be happy with.

Why does Michael Flynns quote make it sound like there was doubt about whether he was pro-rape

I thought he put it really well, and if he did it off the top of his head even better, club should possibly get him doing the wider PR.

I suspect his caution as you have detailed has been rather driven by events over the last few weeks where many in the media and wider population has shown themselves entirely prepared to jump to massive negative conclusions to suit their own narratives based upon a part, selective interpretation of what people have actually said.

I just found the unprompted sentence of ‘ I don't condone rape, let's get the elephant out of the room’ to be funny in isolation.

The bit about false claims is a big yuck though. As others have said, not guilty =/= false claim.

He's a football manager not a legal expert. He's been asked to comment in a thorny area, to say the least, and I think the majority of people will understand what he's trying to get across. Those with a season pass to the Outrage Bus were going to get on it whatever he said.
