The amusing thing is that the club are trying to give information through TSTBL, but most people I know can’t stand them. Which then makes it another point of annoyance towards the club for many.

In regards to the negativity, I can see why it is happening. We are coming off the back of an extremely painful season and as of today we look really thin on the ground. I am sure that will change, but it is a legitimate concern and one that shouldn’t be dismissed.

Build a decent squad and win games, no one will care if Clem or Rob tell us nothing.

I just don’t remember, in all the years I’ve supported this basket case of a club, a pre season as negative as this one.

We’ve had some seasons with awful sides, awful managers and awful owners and I still don’t think any of them have been looked at as negatively as this upcoming one.

Yeah quite.
Even the Power/Clem saga of will we won't we have a club at least we had hope.
That year after the playoffs I thought we would kick on but that didn't materialise and we threw away a decent team. This year is going the same way and it is proving harder to get out of this league. Talk of big fish in this division then that is Bradford and they've failed to reach the playoffs size means nothing down here.
We missed the opportunity to go up under Garner, we had vale on the ropes at home and he slowed the play down allowed them back in and played negatively at vale park.
I for one won't applaud the bald cunt at Colchester next Saturday probably just call him a cunt.

I think it’s the perceived lack of trying.

….even when the finances were really bad when Kingy was gaffer - he still managed to pull some rabbits out of hats, some dog shit too but players are nearly always a gamble.

…but…in that era Kingy always tried his best with the hand he was dealt - like a footballing Del Boy…

This pre-season just feels flat. Like we’ve admitted defeat and we arent even trying. I’m sure that isn’t the case but it doesn’t half feel that way. Like we’ve just accepted our squad is our squad and that’s it…

I think you've hit the nail on the head DV. At least for me.

I can accept failure. But I want to go into the season with hope and the feeling we've tried.

Flynn and Rob's words were a great tonic at the time. But nothing has happened since. yet anyway.

The perceived lack of trying is the thing that hurts. As they say it’s the hope that gets you. Currently there is very little buzz or hope. Sign a couple and not get the pissing drone out and it might be more rosy…

The lack of trying cannot be placed on Flynn.
This club have also restructured the staff over the summer which coincided with what Rob Angus was telling the fans at supermarine with the Swan analogy.

Hatswell also mentioned the most surprising thing for him was the quality of squad and why previous mangers have not seemed to have got the best out of them.

Maybe Flynn and Hatswell really do rate this squad.
Maybe players ARE asking too much and some clubs are spending beyond their means because of the fear of the “strength” of L2 this season.

The mantra this season is we will only get players in that improve the first 11/squad.

Jamie Russell’s experience and the way he talks gives me real hope too.
I’ve really enjoyed listening to Flynn and Hatswell talk this preseason and clem’s interview the other day aligned with the management.

To say our club isn’t trying is just unfair considering all of the above and the small matter that a ball hasn’t even been kicked in the league.

I’m not a happy clapper by any means as my dad passed on the moaning gene. People just seem to look past the evidence presented to them.

Yes the evidence, 2 players in. There’s 5 weeks left and Flynn has said he’ll go to the end of the window if he has to, given the state of things.

Plenty of posters have also pointed out some of our most important signings come in towards the end of the window.

Apologies for the ramble.

Any signings admin?
2xCB 1xDM 1xLWB 1x Big FW before window shuts please.

There’s some hope for you.

One thing is for sure, Flynn/Hatswell should stop saying that we are signing a player/players 'soon' etc.

I don’t think for one second the club aren’t trying.
I don’t think for one second any fan thinks the club aren’t trying.

It’s the perception based on nothing more than the lack of incomings to (hopefully) improve last seasons mid table squad.

For whatever reason (currently) we’ve stagnated where as other teams have improved or at least have taken the gamble on new players improving them.

yeah, I think "trying" has been used in the wrong way.

I've agreed with DV twice in two days now - 'stagnating despite trying" more accurate.

I think there's also an expectation issue. "2xCB, 1xDM, 1xLWB, 1xBCF" - that's 5 more and I don't that's way out there for what fans think we need. I'd call this the spine of the team almost. I didn't think we'd leave recruitment of that so late, so I assume we aren't getting it now!

How did last seasons gamble work out? Not very is obvs the answer, so a more considered and structured approach IMHO opinion is what appears to be happening.

Time will tell on this preseason.

This time next year we will either be raving about how we took our time to get the right players or how we delayed too long and ended up with panic buys.

Everyone keeps using Doyle as the yard stick, but let’s remember he only signed when he did because Yates got sent off.

2 years ago to the day yesterday, Ben Gladwin became our first signing of the summer, and became only the 9th contracted player at the club.
Now we all know how that went, and we are in a lot better position now then we were back then.

I honestly thought that pre season would prove to fans that there really is no rush in getting players in, as long as they’re the right ones.

A valid ramble

I'm not sure Hatswell could say anything else.  Backing the players and blaming others for their failures is something they have to do to try to get more out of them.   The squad clearly isn't great, it's still too young, too short and imbalanced and they will know that and will be looking to address it.

Playoffs will be hard this year 10th-15th is depressingly realistic at the mo even with a couple of monster centre halves.

I’m not a “happy clapper” and still inwardly have reservations about our ownership because of the past association with Power and the number of his hangers on still appearing to be loitering our club.
Player wise - the seen to be first XL have more than held their own against City and Swansea strong XL’s but the lack of back up depth is a major concern if we pick up additional injuries following Clayton and Devine (again).
I’m confident Flynn will have his choices and rightly doesn’t want to bankrupt a club with limited funds but is waiting for player greed levels to drop or they will be left sitting on the fence at end of transfer window.
I’m friends with a player who will remain nameless who ‘not this season’ dropped two divisions from League 1 to National League for a basic salary before playing bonuses that was 4x his league 1 wage.
He has a three year contract and a written guarantee that coaching courses to obtain UEFA 1&2 are included so not only is he financially stable but should have the opportunity to remain within the game when he retires.
Money does talk even at lower league level……………
