We need an Umerah/Bogle type player, though. Telford is no use to us.
I would agree to a point, we need a different type of striker to change games or as a different approach, a big style target man, but Bogle/Umerah for me have hit their limit. I would rather us go for Jamille Matt who looks to lead the line very well and wins more than his fair share of headers, but hes under contract at Walsall still. Shame we missed out on Harry Smith who for me would have been perfect, so another of that type, definately. Telford is a decent player but high wages and very similar to what we have, a ball playing number 10/2nd striker isnt a priority. |

Genuine question mate, have you seen him play? I have to say he wouldnt be on my most wanted list. Bogle...see Umerah.  Ha, fair question Venks! I think (but I'd have to check records to verify) he was in the Charlton side when we played them in either 2020 or 2021. Pretty sure he came off the bench and I remember him being a right handful. (good touch for a big man type player) Looking at his career, it seems that since he left Grimsby his record has been patchy and he hasn't really found a 'home'. Here's a question for you. Given the pick of Harry Smith, Umerah and Bogle which player would you go for? |

Telford for me would be too similar to Charlie. Which is why I'm surprised we went for Johnson. I guess if you want to have an option off the bench then great, but I don't think a Telford or a Johnson is a good way of spending £156,000 of our wage budget. |

Smith 100%. The player that was a handful was Chuks Aneka. Bogle started the game and missed two absolute sitters yet still scrambled a goal and was hoisted off at half time cos he was shocking and replaced by Aneke who tore us apart and was the big man with the good touch you wrongly remember! |

2020 one of the two home games fans could go to during COVID. Just watched the highlights from that and I remember the fuss when Matt Smith was sent back on loan. Just had a look and saw he's at Wigan following a loan at Doncaster. Hardly a career that's taken off. |

Fair point! I think Kemp can potentially play up front so he could be the 'emergency' option (slipping Cain into the number 10 role) Smith 100%.

I liked Matt Smith. I know others didn't and he seemed to split the fanbase as a lot of our players tend to. Wigan is an interesting 'choice' to try and rekindle a dwindling career. It could be similar to Harry M who didn't have a lot of options when we signed him. |

Have a friend who is a Charlton fan, when they signed Matt Smith & DJ about the same time asked what they were like.
Within a few weeks came back to say DJ looked good & had something about him, thought Smith was next to useless.

Thought Matt Smith was a class palyer at such a young age, until he started to be asked to do the Anthony Grant role, he went downhill somewhat after that, which was not really his fault.

Smith & Grant carried the midfield for a large part of that season.
In fact they were about the only ones available to play in central midfield.
Credit to Smith for hanging in there in very difficult circumstances & he did impress at times.
He did have the body language of someone that was just skulking about on the pitch though.
Wonder if that has held him back in this day & age of all action dynamism.
Then again not many of our current midfielders would fit that bill which is why there are where they are.
Tempo is key in L2. Up to Flynn to instill that if his managerial mojo is still working.

I always thought Smith flattered to deceive. Decent at his best but miles off Doughty the previous year, who was a huge loss. |
