But this isn't how moneyball works...  The point of Moneyball is you take players on the cheap that nobody else would consider because they AREN'T scoring goals but the data indicates that there style of play isn't suited to the current teams set up (i.e. a player who like balls to their feet playing in a team that plays hoofball) - put them in the right set up and they will score goals and cost you literally nothing... take McKirdy as a prime example - he's a manager's worst nightmare, a moany little cunt who gets booked and banned for stupid reasons and likes certain style of play but for years he did fuck all so a manager is happy to sell him cheap or release him... we pick him up, put our arm round him, put him in the right set up and he scores goals for fun...

McKirdy needs a good set up around him and I doubt he'll get that from 90% of the teams in the EFL - he also needs players that will put up with his petulant reactions when they don't pass the ball to him..  If he goes then he will descend into mediocracy

Moneyball is all about ignoring the obvious stat's and looking at the ones that everyone else ignores... looking at data over 2-3 seasons, not just one game or a purple patch - and aligning that with how you want your own team to play and filling gaps.

You are correct, it would go totally against the Moneyball system we currently employ and woudl come down to the old school scouting method, one which I hope we haven't TOTALLY ignored in favour of xG stats etc.

That wasn't the consensus about Ward towards the end of last season though, although it was the consensus about Jojo.  The Ward love even boiled over at the start of this season and led to Sol getting pelters.

And I agree, that if we get offered £ for Ward, we should take it.  It would give us an opportunity to get in a quality young permanent keeper that can be developed into our no.1 for next year.  We need to unearth Benda MkII.

I think loan keepers are fine, it's just not a position that makes you money for selling - Foderingham and Vigs both lost us money (in the latter case, quite a lot).

Loan keepers are fine if you find a capable one.  If you sign a Kovar then it leaves you in deep shit, as 7 keepers in a season shows..

I think the Brynn/Ward or Benda/McCormick model makes sense with a permanent backup as the insurance policy.

Ward’s Ok as a keeper but is he good enough all round to bother keeping is the question. His kicking is shocking and the Walsall match showed it hasn’t improved during preseason, I wouldn’t fancy Ward dealing with some of the bouncing back passes that Brynn gets every game.
