Payne loves this club, I’ll be very surprised if he signs for Crawley Town for similar wages just to play in front of less than 2K crowds. It’s a step back which ever way you look at it. Personally I think the deal is already done and will be the last signing the club announce, a sort of cherry on top if you like 👍
Would love to believe that's true but can't but good for him or us missing most of pre season? I'm sure he's keeping himself fit somewhere but reckon someone would have noticed if he was training with the club still. In Adeloye he looks like someone who won't be bullied off the ball. Seems well capable of holding the ball up which we missed last season.

Here's an interesting one. Now we've brought in a couple of midfielders I wonder if most fans would rather Payne signed his contract or we swooped for another striker on his (alleged) 5k a week instead?

I thought it was dead in a water with Payne now tbh, especially after we’ve paid fees for players. Nobody can fault the last 3 or 4 signings imo, all very impressive on paper and genuine signs of ambition.
Keeping Payne would be incredible though, and with him in id say we’ve got a stronger squad that last season.

I’d take Payne - a known, proven quantity and the boost that would give the club would be immense. The midfield additions, whilst promising on paper, are largely unknown quantities at present. We should definitely be targeting another forward though - only having the single option last season really cost us. I’d happily see Davison return!

This. Wouldn’t have an issue with Davison as a squad player. I suspect the new Charlton manager rated him though…

The latter for me, although it’s a tough call. I really rate Payne but we are certainly not looking light in midfield and if his 5k went on an 18/20 goal striker then I’m all for it. Also just rather bored of the will he/won’t he? Shit or get off the pot

Agents get in the ears of players but ultimately player has final say thus you are right. Our recent ownership difficulties after all were linked to agents. Gone are the days where the parents were the players agents, big business now for sure as we all know.

Don’t believe Crawley are in pole position now. Can only hope you are right. Last weekend I was confident he would sign. 🤞

If we were offering Payne £5k a week he would have signed already, I don't get where this £5k a week budget for Payne is coming from. The reason he still hasn't signed for anyone is because he can't get his £5k a week that he was earning on his previous contract. I think it's pretty well known that our offer is less than that, and seemingly all the other offers too.

100% This. If it’s a straight choice between us and creepy I have a feeling he will choose us. Unless the contract has been withdrawn due to the new influx of players. The next few days will be interesting.

Spot on, he got a lot of goodwill because he stayed last season. Looks most likely that he stayed then because he couldn’t get the same wages elsewhere. If he does sign again that would show a lot more than last season

If Payne does sign, you'd think somebody would have to make way.
The only player I can think of is Williams. Is there room for the two of them in this system?
With the world cup coming up and his buddy Garner gone, It's possible Williams could move to league one for a small fee. We then free up wages and shift on a player who can rarely complete 90 mins.
I love Williams, but for as good as he is, he spends a lot of time on the floor. Wonder what sort of wage he's on?

Personally I rate Williams higher than Payne and in an ideal world I would keep both but Williams is on a lower wage as he joined after the wage cap/embargo so will be on way less wages than Payne was on or will want.
I think Williams spends a lot of the time on his arse as thats his game, he draws and often wins fould, I think he was the most fouled player in L2 last season so if we utitlise that skill so that we can use the free kicks better that he wins then we could be onto a winner.
