I see from Total Sports coverage of the press conference this morning Richie now says "I want a replacement for Jerry Yates, a replacement for Woolery, and a replacement at centre-back."  What happened to the midfielder he really wanted for the last couple of weeks. Perhaps realised the budget isn't going to stretch that far.

Tough job for an amateur, likely unpaid, commentator. He won’t please thousands of fans at once
It is indeed. I had one go at co-comms and it was a lot harder than it seems from the listening end of the mike. Easy for people to criticise, a lot harder to actually do. And for the record, I don't get what people's problem is with Rob H, he always seems to do a pretty good job to me, knows his stuff and adds to/rounds out the commentary, rather than just repeating what the professional commentator has said in slightly different words which far too many co-commentators do (Clinton Morrison, I'm looking at you)

I would say in the current environment it’s perfectly set up for any go-getting fans who think they could do better to do alternative commentary of their own. The technology exists and they’d never have a better audience for it

Interesting idea... think they'd quickly realise slagging off Andrew, who spins many media roles and has a ton of experience, isn't the smartest move.

RUMOURS!

Why would we be able to sign Williams for free. Was he out of contract? If so, why did Posh pay £400,000 for him?

Still need a winger, a striker, a CM (perhaps now more than ever if this weird Doughty stuff has an element of truth?) and a CB.

Four out to get 4 in I'd guess.

And for the record, I don't get what people's problem is with Rob H,

I think it's been well documented.

His commentary was negative to the point where it sounded as though we were performing very poorly, but that just was not the case. Several people have made the same observation. You might not agree with them, but people have made their observations quite clear and quite a few people agree with those observations.

Another thing that grated for me was his 'very worrying' comments about the defence, although everybody knew we had only 1 first teamer in the back 4. It was screaming out for some context to be applied, but there was none to be seen.

Not intended as a dig at anybody here, but the 'try it yourself then' attitude also grates. I would not try it myself. I bet it is very hard and I'd no doubt be shit at it. But that does not mean to say those that do try should be free from criticism.

Hoping Power/Wellens pull something out of the bag ahead of tomorrow. Last season when Yates got sent off they moved very quickly to get the Doyle move done so we had a striker for the next match. The gaps look bigger for tomorrow then they did at that point.

Look I get the defence of him, but in the last 2 matches they may as well have been speaking about different matches. I usually attend games so haven’t suffered Hockaday but that doesn’t make the current incumbents above criticism, on Tuesday they were saying how we were struggling to get the ball....we had 70% possession FFS. Hartley may be unpaid but providing his services at the moment is getting him into games which is a privilege rather than a chore.
Most people are watching the matches now as well as listening so are in a position to form their own opinion and its more than 1 or 2 pointing out that the commentary leaves a lot to be desired. With this being the only way fans can see games currently and the BBC being funded by the licence fee my opinion is they have a duty to provide the best quality service they can and at the moment I don’t think that is the case and needs highlighting.

Thought the piss stains were interested - along with Sam Winnall.

Maddison is a bit of a bell end, though. Enough to put a lot of clubs off.

Taylor and Winnall up front would be good at this level

The very worrying back 4 comments are valid I think. It’s all well and good saying it’s mainly a reserve back four, but given how few of the ‘first’ back four are available it’s right to be concerned given we’ll be walking into the season with the backups on the pitch. Backups who haven’t impressed in the first two games

It's important to distinguish between Andrew and Rob here. Rob's a volunteer and fills in when the beeb can't get a summariser. He's not a commentator. He's a fan, with an opinion and a lot of STFC knowledge.

Andrew is a pro. Has been doing this for years and is more skilled than any of us, even if you don't love his style or whatever.

Either way - on Tuesday some of the comments were more negative that many of us read the game. That's it.

RUMOURS

Broadbent is going to be hard to shift injured. Are we looking for a first choice CB or adequate cover?

Agree with that. Never had a problem with AH commentary, though I didn't agree with it all on Tuesday.  Must be my pessamist nature I suppose.

Conversly never really enjoyed Vic Morgan's commentart, and he is definitely a sound bloke, STFC diehard and liked by most.

Sorry, I didn't mean I don't know or understand what the criticisms are, just don't agree with them. I should have phrased that better

That's fair enough, although I think a lot of the time people just assume that being a co-commentator is just rocking up and getting a freebie to watch a game and having a bit of a chat about it and "I could do that". There's way more to it than that and no you fucking couldn't (not aimed at you FH)

Back on rumours it’s obviously not ideal but if I was Power I’d be waiting until nearer the window closing and players getting desperate and lowering their demands. Also by then we may have a better idea of when fans will be back in grounds as with COVID restrictions ramping back up October looks overly optimistic now.

That sounds pretty Power-ish, but if that is the plan, Lee, then ffs communicate it with Wellens.  He’s much less likely to blow a fuse if he knows there’s a plan. His attitude earlier in the week suggested that nobody was talking and any plan had been ripped up.

Or that the plan has been communicated and he was trying to put pressure on to change it. Or that he was trying to bullshit opponents. Or agents. Or simply that he'd just watched his side play poorly and was pissed off.
