He wasn't played because they had to pay him extra when he made first team appearances etc and was their highest paid player too, not really because he wasn't good enough.

Although most Rovers fans seem to think he wasn't good enough anyway!

As I put earlier, if he is cheap enough and it doesnt stop us getting in other players in positions that are needed like a striker then go for it.

As an addition I agree but not in place of a striker we desperately need

In the adver article it says two attacking players coming in

Quote
Wellens said: “I think it’s a really good move for Scott.

“I have to say, over the last few months, Scott Twine’s development has accelerated rapidly.

“So I think it would have been wrong of me to keep him here with no development programme available.

“It’s a horrible situation because I’ve got to be honest, I didn’t want to let him go. I think he would have had an impact for us this year from the bench.

“But I’m also conscious that there will be another two forward-minded players coming in.

“And with Tyler Smith, Jack Payne, Diallang Jaiyesimi and Hallam Hope, it might have just stifled his progress a little bit.”

It's hard to disagree with any of that

Nice positive comments from Wellens.  Not the usual platitudes you get from a manager in this situation.  Let’s see what sort of a ballsup Newport make of Twine’s development.

(Quoting the bits from Wellens from the Adver from tans' post)
This isn't the first time Wellens has complained about us not having a post-18 dev programme - it means that players don't get those extra couple of years to develop after the youth team, it's a bit sink or swim in the first team squad. Although he's also said that lads coming in from other teams' U23s sides aren't always ready to play "men's football". Which is a common complaint generally about players coming out of U23s into League football, that they're used to a technically competent style of football but not always the need to win which comes with League football.

On the main point, pleased to see Twine is getting a decent chance to prove himself in the League

Which brings back around our recent discussion regarding whether or not a u23/reserve set up would seem a long term benefit or not.

Agree that this is the right move for Twine to get game time. I think Cheltenham might have been a slightly better move for him but maybe this is Wellens saying to Twine, go and show me you can slug it out. Because we know he has ability, just needs to do it at a decent level. If he does well, it will increase his value, Town then have an asset and or a player that can start at STFC.

On the flip, if he does well bit we also do well, it would be a natural progression to then prove himself at L1 level.

Or he isn't good enough and struggles at Newport. Wellens is doing the best he can for the player in terms of development. I'm glad this move has happened and puts to bed a more longer and drawn out Miles Storey type scenario.

Wish him all the best and to come back a more complete player from it.

Do away with underneath 23's and bring back the combination League like we had in the 70's & 80's

Steve Humphreys told to stay away from the club during his bout of feeling unwell as he is tested for Covid.

https://www.echo-news.co.uk/sport/18691563.southend-united-striker-stephen-humphrys-cannot-return-training-test-results-come-back/

Southend fans think this is a thinly veiled excuse for him not playing last night as to not jeapordise his forthcoming transfer to a L1 club, a few saying that they doubt they will ever see him in the Southend shirt again.

FWIW Saarfend were well beaten by Concord Rangers last night 3-0 playing a mix of first teamers and youth players.

Also every poster has rubbished the tweet that they turned down £600k for him and all say the club would likely get a max fee of £150k which brings him into the much more affordable category for us.

I often used to go to the football combination games in the late 70s early 80s when we were away at a Northern outpost in the league just to watch a game on a Saturday.

Decent level of player too, used to be split roughly North/South at Birmingham (not Highworth Wink ) with every London Div 1 team fielding a side that often had a mix of first teamers coming back to fitness and youngsters.

I remember in 1981 (I think) Spurs brought down a team full of 1st teamers like Villa, Galvin, Ossie, Perryman, Daines, Brooke, Miller, Hazard, Taylor, Gibson and Falco. Brooke scored a 40 yarder for them to win the game in front of a 5,000 crowd in a full North Stand.

I saw Trevor Brooking, Kerry Dixon, Liam Brady, Frank Stapleton, Pat Jennings, Ray Wilkins, Tony Woodcock, Kenny Sansom and many more.

I think thats a great idea.

Same here I would often watch the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs etc who always had some decent players either out of form from the first team or recovering from injury etc. Also it was great for the younger players like Twine to experience playing against pros all at a stadium rather than a soulless training pitch
