£500,000 bid for Lee Barnard according to the Sun. Probably bullshit.

I thought according to the Saints forum he was available on a free.

Money would be better spent on a permanent Bostock

At this level, yes he isn't bad at all.

170 games and 64 goals.

I don't think there is any substance to this rumour though.

I imagine he'd be decent, but I wouldn't be particularly happy about spending money on someone who's 28 and is renowned for having a bad attitude. A recipe for disaster is that. Just give me half the money. I'll do nothing for it, but it still represents a saving.

Yes he does have a bit of a reputation for trouble, and at 28 is a bit old to change his ways I think.

I don't think it would be anywhere near £500k if he did come to us.

Saints fans seem to think any transfer is likely to be a loan out from them.

I think this is a clue of his ability Flashheart, from the Saints forum.

Quote
Barnard isn't good enough and nostalgia has no place in the team. He probably wasn't even good enough for the top half of the championship but due to being injured/in court didn't have a chance to show that, so people still love him from league one.

As with so many of our players that seem to be loved on here i feel it's probably worth pointing out again that running around a lot doesn't really make you a good footballer or Brett Ormerod would've played for Barcelona.

maybe somebody at the Sun dropped a bostock when reporting and added a zero to the end of Barnards price tag

Two thoughts:

1.  If we are considering an outlay of £500k on a single player (and it's far from clear that we are), I would like to understand the thinking of the board as to what happens if we don't manage promotion to the Championship within a couple of seasons.  Another promotion is the stated aim of the Board, within the context of then running the club sustainably in the Championship, but what happens if we don't get there?  To borrow a quote from the Oxford forum, are we going 'shit or bust' or would a failure to get promoted from League 1 by (say) 2014 be manageable without putting our medium term viability at risk?

Don't get me wrong...I am excited by what is happening at the Club.  Best close season in years.  But we need to know we are operating sustainably.  No one wants to emulate Portsmouth.

2.  With competition for places being what it is/will be, isn't it about time we thought about running a formal Reserve Team fixture list again?
