If anyone thinks if we sell a player for £350k, then we will have that money to spend on a replacement, is deluded.
A large chunk of our fan base are deluded though. They think Clem is coming in Jan to sort us out without any sales, let alone after selling Khan for £350k

Less so on here but on the socials, yes we do have a metric shit ton of deluded fans. All hail Clem.

I think they eat up and enjoy the Lee Power boogeyman narrative so much that if anything they'll be disappointed if these funds don't go towards paying some form of debt. 'Well said Clem, top man' etc etc etc.

If anyone thinks if we sell a player for £350k, then we will have that money to spend on a replacement, is deluded. Always have been, and always will be, a selling club. That's not necessarily a bad thing and is no-ones fault. That is just lower leagues for you.
of course we'll have some of the money for replacements. it's what we replace them with that's the issue. you can't cut to the bone long term and hope to stay in the league. similarly you can't expect crowds to hold up, causing a bigger black hole. and yeah, you can't spend what you don't have either. put simply even if the money is going to the club, eventually we'll crash and burn

As much as 350k is a decent amount of money for a player that is probably not better than this Division, and I can't imagine us turning it down, it's really not how the model works. It's not a success by selling lots of players for 100k-300k, it's by digging up one every season or two that you can sell for a couple of million. Otherwise your turnover is far too high and it suggests, as we are proving, that you are dabbling in real risky transfers. The gem's are not that great, which means your misses are really bad - for every Wakeling, we've let go a whole bunch for free that we spent wages on. 300k a player does not cover that sort of mess, like we created last year.
Getting a two million forward sold suggests you can reinvest in smarter way, bring your talent level up a notch for a couple of seasons, reduce player turnover etc.
As an isolated transfer, this would make sense to green light AFTER we have sewn up the permanent transfer of one or both of Kemp and Young AND have brought in two midfielders One to replace the gap Khan creates and the other being the one we desperately needed already. That then balances the books, improves the squad a little and provides the opportunity to bring in a loan or two.

I think Khan is quality and always have done. He would always be a player that excels in a good team though and not one I would want in a relegation battle. As much as I love him I would take 350 IF it was spent on young for example.
If Khan was 4 years younger I would think different, getting on now though in terms of long term big fees

Yes its good money, but can you really see that being reinvested in the squad? I cant. Bear in mind that it isnt all in one lump either. I wonder what happened to the Wakeling money, bearing in mind we had to inject £250k to cover running costs in October
Didn't the club take out a loan against future transfer fee's ? where did that money go, as it sure as hell didn't go on transfers, so you assume the Wakeling money is swallowed up in that. And thinking about it, Clem's recent statement about injecting 250k, are our accounts in that bad shape that all this money is needed now ?

Khan is quality. You can see that purely by the eye test. With higher level coaching and playing in a more structured side he has the capabilities of playing in the championship. No doubt about that.

He is 28 next week, not sure he fits the profile of someone who you may take a gamble on higher up the food chain on the basis of coaching him. It's probably a bit late.

I see what you're saying but I'll explain: Khan does things not many players at this level can do. He can take the ball under pressure and is extremely press resistant. His ability to quickly change direction and glide past players takes people out of the game and creates space for others. This is why even though statistically he might not pull up many trees, the eye test is vital there's a great player there. What I mean by coaching is more along the lines of somebody grabbing hold of him. Sort his discipline, identify his best role and create a structure around him where he can showcase his qualities without being exposed. Playing in our lightweight midfield for 18 months has done him no favours in this respect.

Looking back in this thread made me chuckle to read DiV’s reaction to Jake Young signing
‘Shite’
I was looking for that bit about us taking out some sort of loan to fund transfers. I know I posted about this at the time but I’m buggered if I can find it.

Looking back in this thread made me chuckle to read DiV’s reaction to Jake Young signing ‘Shite’
There was nothing to suggest he was going to do this, and was surely brought in as bench warmer - then RHM got injured. In any case it has to be around April/May that the loan stuff was outed as it was in the AB. not sure it helps. https://www.swindontownfc.co.uk/siteassets/2022-23/2022-23-advisory-board-minutes/advisory-board-may-2023-post-meeting-vfinal.pdf• It’s very common practice in football for transfer fees to be staggered over long periods which of course is less than ideal. The mechanism we have used allows us to take that transfer income earlier through an external loan agency and as transfer fee instalments are paid then they go direct to the agency. It’s fairly standard across the leagues, but not widely known by supporters. • As has been highlighted at various points in this Advisory Board update – the club still has a lot of legacy debt and finances remain a challenge - we make no secret of that fact and we need fans’ support more than ever. There is no need to panic as we are sensibly run but until the legacy debt is gone and our stadium developments have progressed, this will always be the case.

My comment re DiV’s comment was just highlighting how our initial reaction to signings can be so off.

Same applies to FBT when he signed last season too. Also for that matter when Anthony Grant signed.
