First off the pendantry, what you're takling about isn't a filter lane. A filter lane is like a right turn only lane at a busy junction/set of lights that stops the traffic being jammed up behind a right turner. Sometimes this is controlled by a filter arrow on the lights.

What you're talking about is a road narrowing and losing a lane, and what the protocol for a considerate road user should be in these circumstances.

There's a couple of issues here. Sometimes there is a bloody good reason to positively encourage people to use both lanes and merge as late as possible. On busy roads, particularly when you're talking about roads narrowing due to road works, you can cause huge tailbacks interfereing with the operation of roundabouts and other junctions if the merging lane isn't used. HOWEVER, when that's the case you'll normally see a sign that reads, "Use both lanes, Merge in turn".

If not, then how soon you choose to pull over out of a lane that's due to close is a matter of personal choice. You CAN leave it until the last minute and get as far up the clear lane as you can before you pull across, but if you do remember this; there's no imperative whatsoever for anyone to let you pull across. It's the other lanes right of way and they can let you in if they want to or ignore you completely, it's up to them.

Samdy, you're right of course that flying up that lane usually will get you ahead of the game a bit, as there's always some mug that will let you in, or some old dear that will not react quick enough to cut you off, but you can't come on here and moan because someone refused to let you in, that's the chance you take.

You also take the chance that if you try to nudge out without being invited some stressed out driver will drag you out of your car and stick one on you, and an entire queue of traffic will pointedly look in the other direction.

I have pushed in sometimes, but only when I have missed the turn or something and I would then like to be let in, but then how are the other drivers to know that it was a genuine mistake and I'm not just being a selfish cunt.

Asides from that I join the back of the queue and wait my turn, like the vast majority of other drivers do. After all those in front probably want to get to their destination quickly just as much as I do.

Er. What Lumps said. In the eyes of the law it's called lane priority, as I found out a few years ago.

Slow moving traffic on a duel carridgeway and needed to get in the right hand lane. Plenty of room, indicated, started to move across and the bloke wasn't looking, speeded up and ran into the back of me.

Apparently it was my fault according to Mr. Policeman as he had lane priority.

Some dappy bint didn't want to let me in, so I wind down the window to have a word a politely remind her it's a filter lane, or to that effect. She replies with "we've all had to queue, so should you".

WTF?! It's what filter lanes are designed for. In the end, she still didn't let me in and to top it off she was a fucking Tory (the window proudly stuck in her back window said so).

But 'filter' doesnt mean 'rip down the oustide and try to force your way in', it means think, plan and merge earlier.

if everyone did that there wouldnt be as much congestion at the filter.

its the same on motorway roadworks.you get clear indication that it will go down to one lane.most drivers queue in the lane as they should.but you get arseholes moving out of that lane to then tear up the outer lane to then cut in.likewise the twats who wait until they are virtually hitting the cones to then cut in.

Just go into  the outside lane and stay parallel to the cars you were next to, until you get to the end, problem solved.
