It would be great if he came here, but if he doesn't we will just have to get on with it.
If the offer is as good as suggested then we have done all we can, if Northampton offer more and he wants to go there, then so be it.

Before getting all hissy bear in mind this could just be the agent trying for the highest deal. Also see from the G and H as below. IMO this is down to negotiating and could go to the last minute.

We won't be held to ransom, says Malpas

Hot property: Simon Cox
Swindon Town boss Maurice Malpas says the club will not be held to ransom with the transfer window set to slam shut tonight.

The Scot has accused Reading chairman John Madejski of "moving the goalposts" in negotiations for the deal to bring Simon Cox to the County Ground.

Both parties are now satisfied with the final fee for the talented frontman but a sticking point is believed to be the Premiership club wanting a sell-on clause.

However, Malpas is confident of signing former nine-goal loanee Cox today.

"Their chairman has moved the goalposts a couple of times but they are trying to look after themselves in the future. There is always wheeling and dealing," said Malpas.

"The overall fee is agreed, it is just how it is going to be paid."

But Malpas knows with a new board at Town, who host Northampton on Saturday, clubs will see their chance to ask for more cash.

"We have got criteria in terms of the wages and transfer fees we can offer and we are not going to splash money on the team and hope they come together," he said.

"The directors are aware of that and refuse to go down that road."

Malpas says Cox is keen to return to SN1, and is also hopeful of signing a midfielder before tonight's midnight deadline.

"Terms are always an issue but Simon wants to come, which makes is easier," he said.

"I have also spoken to a midfielder but I honestly don't know if that will go through."

One unnamed player looks set to leave though and is in discussions with another club.

"There is one player who is speaking to another club and the ball is in his court," added Malpas.

I would love him to come but we cannot break the wage structure, he isnt THAT good, its not like hes the next Wayne Rooney or Michael Owen, hes a good Premier reserve player who can hold his own in this league without setting it alight.

Its probably as statred his agent trying to get the best deal and not even Cox but he has to look after his own interests for the future, but I cant help thinking there is a huge element of greed, knowing he is wanted by 2 clubs that both will be willing to pay a good sum to him and for him.

Glad I was pessimistic now about our prospects of getting him!

As others have said, if he wants to go and line his pockets thats fair enough but fuck him.

tbh most of what is said in the transfer window is just haggling as everyone tries to get the best deal they can - clubs want to sign players for nothing and pay them a fiver, agents want massive signing on fees and Baby Bentley wages. It's so much smoke and BS, no point getting aereated about it until we know one way or another.

(Although obviously if Cox signs for Northampton he is lowlife of the worst kind ;-))

Well it sounds like he wants to return to us so it's a case of hopefully being able to agree terms with the player and his agent now.

Something else occured to me this morning.  It's by no means certain that Reading will be playing in the Premiership next year.  They're 2 points above the drop zone - and were they to go down, Cox would probably find himself a lot closer to the first team there than he is at the moment.  Reading might be having second thoughts about offloading him at this stage.

I think clearly the agent is saying Northampton etc is offering more money knowing Swindon have more cash, trying to get the best deal for his client.
