PLYMOUTH Argyle will today step up their search for Ian Holloway's replacement with Paul Sturrock top of their wish list.

Last night Town had not received an approach for Sturrock but the Swindon Advertiser understands an approach is imminent and that the County Ground board would not stand in his way.

However, with Sturrock yet to pass an 18-month lock-in' clause built into his contract, Town would seek hefty compensation if the Pilgrims confirm their interest in their former boss.

Sturrock, who was manager at Home Park from 2000-2004, has been widely linked with a return to the Plymouth hot-seat since Holloway's departure but all parties have so far declined to respond to the speculation.

Earlier this week Town director Bob Holt issued a hands-off' warning to Plymouth as Swindon fight to hang onto their prize asset.

Yesterday Holt confirmed there had been no word from Plymouth and that he hoped the phone stayed silent over the coming days.

He said: "We have heard nothing at this stage and we're keeping our fingers crossed that we do not get a call from them. I understand there's a Plymouth board meeting in Sheffield tonight (Friday) but I don't expect to hear anything until Monday."

A Plymouth spokesman confirmed an "unofficial" meeting was scheduled to take place in Sheffield, with the vacant manager's post likely to be high on the agenda.

An internet poll of Argyle fans revealed Sturrock is their overwhelming favourite to take the reins, with more than 50 per cent keen to see their former boss return.

Sturrock, meanwhile, has dismissed the rumours as "speculation."

1.2 Million compensation perhaps.

With an 8 Million clause added at the 11th hour.

The fact they wouldn't stand in his way and are hoping the call never comes to me says they have asked him and he would go if asked. Sad

Mike D has probably had enough of him being linked with other Clubs just like the Dennis Wise situation.

"Wouldn't stand in the way"

Well in Sturrock's own words we want to become a selling club, and the biggest sale Swindon has made in the last year has been Dennis Wise to Leeds.

Why won't they take the chance of another half million for Sturrock?
