If he had played in that tournament he would have had 1 weeks rest before starting the season, as Blackburn were in some shitty european cup. It is possible that he could have played basically two full seasons with no break then be called up to the full England side for Euro 2008 and had no break for 3 years. Thats unacceptable.

Why no outrage when Rooney didn't play for the under 21s?

In that case he should of told pearce im knackered but i will come. Then if he does not perform he can say well i did tell the manager and then its pearce who has to answer the critics. If he had been called up to the full squad he would not have said he was knackered so on that basis he was talking shite.

Whoever said its simalar to the carragher situation is also talking shit.Carragher rightly pointed out that other young defenders should be sat on the bench who will gain experience from it rather than putting a 29 yr old their for no reason.Mclaren even fucked that up by calling sol campbell back up

not sure about booing but Bentley should never have been allowed to play for England at any level ever again, just like Carragher.  One of the biggest problems with our side in my eyes is the complete lack of respect the players actually afford to being given an England Cap.  It's become more prevelant as the money has flowed in to the Premiership.

I know where you're coming from but don't you think life has changed. There was a time where playing for your team or England was an honour, now it's just a revenue stream. I don't think respect exists in football anymore, only money. Looking forward to reading Bobby Charlton's autobiog - it may sound old-fartish but those were the days we had some fecking respect

I agree, and that is the problem.  I don't have an issue with someone deciding it's not for them, but don't expect to play again, you've shown where your loyalty lies.

Beckham, for all his faults, has a desire to play for his country, as does Gerrard it seems.

Can't agree with that. Fact is that Carragher couldn't be arsed and threw his toys out of the pram. Pampered primadonna. It's a little sulk from him along the lines of 'if you are not going to play me then I'm going to throw my toys out of the pram'. If you remember, McLaren actually tried to talk him out of it recently - so it is very likely that he WOULD have been played but he obviously thought 'I really can't be arsed - it's too much hassle'.

I no longer watch England games nor am I interested in any football higher than the level that we currently compete at. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Some Premiership players currently earn more than whole football club's turnover FFS. It's because of attitudes like Carragher's and the inept performances from England players probably over the last 15 years that has switched me off. For a supposedly word class team, the poor performances speak volumes - they really can't be arsed.

I heard on the radio a while ago that a Premiership team finishing mid table will get more money than the total of the Championship, League One and League Two teams combined. How on earth you are supposed to compete and progress with one arm tied behind your back I'll never know.

I'd much prefer players were honest if they didn't want to play, let someone else have a chance instead of putting in a half-arsed effort. They're showing more the symptoms that international football is struggling in this country. Not the cause.

bentley pulled out because he thought having a rest and a proper pre-season would make him a better player in the long-term

i'm just amazed a footballer actually has the brains and the courage to make such a decision

and it's obviously worked because his form for blackburn this year has been superb

kudos to that man

Which is fine if he wants to be a good player for Blackburn.  In his life he feels playing for Blackburn to be the more important thing, again, it's his life.  I just feel I'd rather have someone in his place who wants to see playing for England as the pinnacle.  If none exist, then there in lies the problem we have as a Country.  Expectations should then be that we will never win much and the Nationa as a whole can deal with the fact that it's just a nice little addition to the footballing calender.

Basically, is our mentality that football's peak is England, or is it the Prem?

Whilst Club football has always been more important to international to most fans, I think the money involved now has made it more important for the players aswell. So I'd say that Yes. The Prem probably is more important than England.

like i said above, there is a major tourny at the end of the season. If he had played for the u21's it would be 3 seasons with no rest. I think he made a good decision.

It would mean the world to me to pull on the shirt of my country and walk out in front of my own people with the eagle on my chest. It would make me hugely proud, and for somebody to turn their back on that is quite frankly idiotic

Come on, let's not have that one.....

Bless his little heart - not had a rest for three seasons? Maybe the tens of thousands of pounds a week he gets in salary is some compensation no?

Fuck me - train three hours a day - play once maybe twice a week - these fuckers are overpaid primadonna's and the sooner people start realising it the better.

The season finishes in May - starts again in August - if he can't get enough rest in that time there's no hope for us all.
