To quote the infamous Jack Sparrow:

"Shoot him, cut out his tongue, and shoot his tongue"

Or just give him a meaningful sentence

Pirate 1: "Shoot him!"

Pirate 2: "Cut out his tongue!"

Sparrow: "Shoot him, cut out his tongue, then shoot his tongue"

Pure comedy  Cheesy

I'm a bit torn here - on the one hand, he's done his time, so he should be allowed to live a normal life again. On the other hand, 3 years doesn't seem long enough.

He has done the sentence he was given, he is now a free man and should be able to do what the fuck he likes as far as I am concerned, apart from obviously driving like a lunatic.

I think the point is that he killed someone by pure wrecklessness, and more that likely pissed too so he fled the scene and hid for 36 hours and he only gets 3 years. Thats not justice im afraid.

How would you feel if that was someone in your family killed like that and he is back out after only 3 years and straight in to a mega paid job where kids look up to him?

Why not? 3 years seems like it'd be fucking ages to spend in prison to me. What would keeping him longer do? Not going to make time go backwards and stop him doing it.  Doubt any more years would be more likely to stop him doing it again (unless you throw away the key).

People seem to want to relish in some sort of public retribution blood cry.

It's nothing to do with how I would feel, I am saying from his point of view, he has served the sentence he was given, he should be allowed to carry on with the rest of his life.

I know what you're saying, and I am not condoning his actions at all, or saying the sentence was correct, but the law is the law, and he has done his time.

if he was an accountant, he could go back to his occupation without any complaints - why is it different because his occupation is football? he'll only be paid what oldham want to pay him, i doubt he's in the position to demand huge wages.

he served his time, let him get on with it as ginginho says.

I think what is the biggest issue is him serving 3yrs for the crime.  I personally wouldn't want him at my football club, least of all as he's not exactly a role model for young pros, but as has been said he's done his time (however short it was) and I guess clubs are free to try and sign him.

I think the point is that he'll be going back into the public eye.

If he was a singer, actor, or other high profile person, would he walk back into his profession?

All Leslie Grantham did was wank off in front of a PC monitor, and he was dropped by Eastenders!

This prick killed 2 people and ran away.

How do you think the relatives of those killed, or the poor bastard who ended up in a wheelchair will feel, seeing him on the telly, or the back pages?

i doubt hughes is the first person to return to a high profile occupation after a prison term or a criminal conviction and i doubt he'll be the last. not defending what he did, the guy is a total scrote for what he did and how he acted afterwards but despite serving a ludicrously short prison sentence, he can go back to living his own life.

i imnagine they'd find it very difficult but justice isn't about protecting the family of the victims forever, otherwise even petty criminals would be locked away for life.

Should be interesting to see what kind of reaction he gets from Oldham fans, and the away fans when he starts playing again.

For info - Patrick Kluivert was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving, that didn't stop him from continuing his career when he served his punishment (240hrs community service and a 3 month suspended sentence).  I don't think Hughes will get off so lightly from the crowds though.
