perhaps i've been here too long, but i don't really mind the locals -
my first experience of val thorens was coming down from the meribel/corchevel side and immediately being faced with a chavalanche of my fellow countrymen on their back edges doddering down in the middle of the piste.  but spending a whole season there must kick arse... i'm sure i'll still manage to blag a few weekends

Yeah, good atmosphere in VT, no-one takes themselves too seriously out there in terms of boarding or skiiing, just enjoy doing it as much as possible, with maybe the odd drink or two thrown in.

I'm loooking at staying with a mate who's doing a season in Val thorens sometime in the new year, how long should I allow to have a little look around Geneva before I fly home, I've heard it's a nice spot and wondered what there was to see.  Any ideas the best way and how long it takes to transfer from Geneva to VT?

To be fair, Geneva, nice pretty place, lake, big fountain, you can see mont blanc etc but in all - fuck all else and a beer will cost you best part of  a fiver.  Worth a look round for an afternoon, but your time would be much better spent on the snow !

Transfer from Geneva to VT probably 2-3 hours - i'm not totally sure since i've only driven to the other end of the three valleys then boarded over.

Cheers for that, might have a night there to have a look about.  More time on the snow then, although as it's my first attempt I suspect I might be sick of falling over by the end!  That said the apres ski is the real reason for the trip.

Transfer time is 3 hours - used to do the route every Saturday last season - quite a nice journey in fact.

If you mean bin bag parties they don't actually have them in VT - though there's a new bar opened up so they may well instigate it.  Punters love a good chance to dress up and they'd no doubt do quite well out of it.

It's a mate from Swindon, who I was at uni with too, him and three others are just chilling out for the season and doing work for on the piste, about 5 more have proper jobs with ski firms.  I see it as a cheap holiday trying to work it around a chaotic period of home fixtures in late januray though.
