Title: Swindon vs Accrington Stanley (who are they) Matchday Thread
Post by: JoeMezz on Sunday, March 10, 2024, 23:29:03
Hi all, I have it on good authority that potential new buyers have been interested for a few months now and they’ll be in attendance on Tuesday night. They have been in the Directors Box but on Tuesday will be in the Don Rodgers stand to get a flavour of a “real match day experience.” It’s a father and stepson combo, as crypto has been taking off again they have their money from that. They’ll obviously be in suits on Tuesday and believe they’ll be sitting around the penalty area, close to the Town End. Promising times ahead  :pint:

Well, if an evening game v Accy Stanley doesn’t get their pulses racing, nothing will.

Well, clearly they’re not bothered about publicity if as you say they’ll be in suits, at a particular point within the DR stand. Let’s hope they pay for the tickets, wouldn’t want to short change a ‘skint’ Clem now would we. #freeloadingowners

Suits in the DRS is not in keeping with the authentic matchday experience. As is the case with Batch, would greatly prefer something other than crypto as the source of any potential owner’s wealth.

Last minute disaster permitting this should be my first Town game since Exeter NYD before Covid. Can't accuse me of glory hunting I suppose... Every sympathy for those attending regularly but should at least be fun as a daytripper.

Pretty much anything would be an improvement on the current incumbents but the way Crawley have been ran isn’t exactly a glowing endorsement for owners from a crypto background.  If it did come to fruition I’d hope they have sufficient ‘real’ money to ensure our fortunes aren’t just linked to the constant rise and fall of crypto.

Plenty of crap in todays presser

Quote
SUMMARY
Swindon Town v Accrington Stanley presser: as it happened
35 mins ago
SWINDON TOWN FC
By Joe Acklam

Our live feed has now finished.

Swindon have not lost at home to Accrington in front of fans since 1959
Accrington are on a run of four straight defeats
12:44pm
I asked Gunning about trying to fix the mentality, Devine & Clayton, and Hepburn-Murphy:

You can only be positive and try and help them improve with it because the way some of the goals have been conceded are a lot about professionalism.
Clayton has suffered a set back and is probably out for the season, Devine has been training so we are hopeful he could play in a few weeks.
He was unlucky as he had been tight after Tranmere and then we decided to go with more width against Harrogate and two big men. We will see about tomorrow.

12:36pm
Gavin Gunning on his achievements:

Since I have come in, we have had some tough games and it has been good that we have gone toe to toe. We have had two performances that weren't up to scratch, MK and Harrogate. All of the others have been decent, we have been beaten when we weren't in the mental state to stay switched on, like Newport and at the weekend. If you are a player then you should be shattered mentally and physically, more so mentally.

12:34pm
Gavin Gunning on league position:

I didn't know about that and that is not where we will be looking to finish anyway. That is the thing, I have taken over in a tricky situation, we have more points than before but it is still not as many as I would like. Everyone wants to win and so do I. For the fans who have gone through the pain of being there in the Premier League and other good times and then to go through everything that has happened.

12:32pm
Gavin Gunning on Accrington:

In this league, no matter what they game is, it will be tough, home or away. We plan to dominate and be positive in front of our fans.

There is minimal difference in the players from top to bottom, it is that little bit of quality and mindset to create the environment to thrive. Team spirit is a big part of it, the teams that have the big group of senior players can help whereas here we have one or two. The team does need some experience, Charlie has a load and then there is no one else with all those league appearances. It is an inexperienced squad, so I definitely think it needs that, there is no point getting loads of journeymen but you do need that.

12:30pm
Gavin Gunning on defending:

The numbers don't lie, we have conceded 67 goals or something like that, and that is for everyone in the team, are they doing the right things? All of those little things are massive.

Possibly, we don't have someone who sits there and breaks up and is aggressive, but you can't look for excuses, you have to find a solution.

12:29pm
Gavin Gunning on Mansfield:

It is not the worst point to make that in the chaos we prospered. There are parts where you have to be efficient and we didn't do those little details, some is people jumping out of shape and all different spots. At all games at all levels people will not be in the right place, it is just about trying to make it easier for them. It is about trying to get overloads and create an advantage wherever you can, the more emphasis you put on being lucky and relying on quality rather than structure will not help in the long run.

When you look at the Premier League, it is a different sport to the one that we play at this level, Man City-Liverpool was about space and control. You can have greater control, but you have to play to the players that you have. If you have players and it doesn't suit them to be in control then you have to make it chaos.

12:25pm
Gavin Gunning on injuries:

Everyone is ok, just McGurk had a tight hamstring so we didn't bring him on. It came after he came off the bus, so we didn't want to risk him.

McKirdy is still ill and will not be involved.

Particular highlight about not haing a CDM in the team and there being no experience. Also the premier league is a different sport.

The bit about lacking a CDM, you know like the one he said wouldn’t get in the team in January and let go is especially golden. Thought Kahn was one of the best CDM’s in the league according to him.

He just says any old crap and thinks it makes him sound clever. ‘In the chaos we prospered’ what a load of bollocks.

I am not ITK, but I have a feeling that we might not see Harry Mckirdy again.  I could be completley wrong, but if his illness is linked to his health issues then surely they have to err on the side of caution, especially seeing as we are literally playing for nothing.

He only paid £212,500 for the club. It was valued at £7-7.5m at the time. Can’t see him (or whoever) has put in £7m.

My question from before is: is Clem’s 50% of the JV a saleable asset for him? Seeing as he was gifted it, I’d hope he isn’t allowed to benefit.

I think the challenge is the 7m debt Clem has shifted to his other business, plus the 7m that various un-named (but we all know them) investors that are still trying to get their pound of flesh back from the Power days.

Standing has to get his money from Power not the club. THe whole point is that there was no legal agreement covering any money he may or may not have put in the club. More fool him, I say.

Sorry for the confusion, have asked my source some of the questions that have been asked today. The older of the two has been going since the 70s but this has been very on and off as with his career, he’s been moving around a lot. He has been living in the Middle East recently and wants a more recent matchday experience (I’m not sure this is a good thing!). The younger of the two is the one more into crypto and my source has told me that the combined wealth of the older’s career and younger’s crypto will buy the club, with the reach of Middle East associates to run the club moving forward.

Going with the Wobbly One. On a pre match pub crawl. Will probably be a season low in terms of attendance but hopefully not in terms of performance. A comfortable win, cleansheet and several goals would be most welcome.

Scattergun side picking again, Elboozy who played excellent on Saturday gets dropped and RHM who looked poor starts! Brewitt did ok and is dropped and Genesini returns to the bench after about a 6 year absence!

Looks like 4 at the back with Kokolo at LB.

Well lets face it we bypass midfield with his tactics anyway so we dont need more than 2 midfielders.

Boot it out wide and hit teams on the counter and get balls into the box for Charlie and Dry Nun. Simple.

Two destroyer midfielders sure. But we're playing two ball players and then not using them to play the ball.

We could play a midfield 5 of Khan, McEachran, Cain, Devoy & Aguiar and I still don’t think that would stop teams coming through us like a hot knife through butter.

Probably fair but I believe it's traditional to try.

I mean if I were in charge I’d certainly try shoring up the midfield by packing the numbers in there.
Again, I assume the reasoning is Gav has more faith in our attacking players keeping the ball up the pitch than he does our midfielders stopping it coming through…

Well Gunning is certainly simplifying tactics for the players, there no doubt about that, its the kick and chase taught in many schools.

Get it forwards quickly and hope the pace of our players can create something against slow plodding Div 4 defenders.

Yes it can work but you always need more defensive minded midfielders and not lightweight ball players as we can all see we currently have.

Much the better side first 30. McEachran and Devoy bossing the middle. Stan came right back at us, mainly through Dolan who now looks dangerous every time he gets it. Austin and Glatzel playing well,RHM started really well but think Elboozy would be soon coming on if we don't get ahead. Defence has started to look a bit panicky last 10 minutes. Not a bad game to be honest. Hats off to Bycroft for a brilliant point blank save

It's not been good but not sure the half time boos were called for.

We're the better of two poor teams. Entire attacking plan seems to be be RHM being quick enough to pick up on aimless balls but it's sort of working. Midfield two doing a good job in the circumstances.

I found it quite entertaining at times, we have broke with pace and broke their play down well, or at least until about the 31st minute.

Its not awful by any means.

Hopefully people can stop saying people aren't serious about no longer going, not renewing, etc. now because in reality, that's closer to 5k with season ticket holders counted regardless.

Not long ago we were getting 10k vs unattractive opposition and we weren't even doing that great or playing particularly attractive football.

This is probably the most depressing result of all as for the first 30 minutes we were completely outplaying them. I preferred the "5 changes at a time" approach to be honest! For what it's worth Austin and McEachran the only players to have more than a good 30 minutes for me

This squad cannot be getting any proper coaching, I’d be interested to see what the coaching team are actually trying to get them to do.

I know we joke about it but the game plan can’t actually be “just gung-ho and wing it”, there must be actual patterns that they’re trying to implement.

Gunning:
- Dreadful. No intensity or appetite.
- Its not formations or technical ability. It is heart
- If you dont graft and work your heart out...You will come up short in every game as the difference in team is small
- Just compounding errors with errors. When you aren't professional enough....
- We just have to be better (and he includes himself)
- No rotation
- Khan out injured.
- Changed shape with Kokolo coming in.
- But it clearly didnt work as we were horrific
- Motivation: Needs to come from within or you fall down the football pyramid
- Simplistic mistakes followed by other mistakes
- Massively frustrating for the fans and the staff. It has to mean more and has to hurt
- We just didnt do anything tonight. No intensity and no movement
- We didnt have a grandstand finish. It was lack lustre
- Major stumbling block...If you don't work hard at this level
- We played very poor tonight
- If they dont perform in the next 8 games, then the club isnt going to be desperate to extend their deals
- The process is good. At Mansfield we had 20 shots. Tonight there were players on the beach. They have to come out of the team
- Khan is 'just injured'. Gunning wouldnt answer whether he would be available on Saturday ('I don't know')
- There are some fantastic players at this level but they have to believe in themselves and work hard

It's what you get when the owner promotes the ''Summer Sports Club'' u10s coach on a jolly in Straya, but it's ok cos he's been to Clem's house so must be qualified to take the job with absolute zero support or experience. It's not GGs fault tbf, it's the deeper rooted issues and ineptness from above who are liable. I believe this will definitely be Town's lowest ever FL finish  :crash:

Gunning is young and inexperienced, he’s bound to make mistakes. The problem is he is repeating those mistakes and not learning from them. Same as Flynn, make subs, lose game. How can he take off Glatzel and Drinnan and leave us with zero threat. He has one ‘tactic’, the long, diagonal cross field pass. I’m tending to give most of the players the benefit of the doubt as they are the ones suffering from Gunning’s bizarre team selection, subs and team set up. It does bring into question Austin’s thought of saying Gunning is the man for the job permanently.

Feels tonight was a tipping point. Watching my club/team disintegrate in front of my eyes was unsettling.

For the first 20 minutes, it was quickly apparent that Accrington were complete garbage. Probably the worst team we've had down here.

We didn't capitalise, and they slowly grew into the game. Getting stronger as it went on. Or we got substantially worse. Probably a bit of both.

However, putting our shite football to one side, I was absolutely baffled that Gunning took off Glatzel and Drinan. WTF?

Charlie Austin. I'm sorry but you are finished. If I'm Drinan, I'm absolutely fuming to be hooked off and that Austin has finished the full 90 instead.

£3500 a week for somebody who can't run. Yes you ping a good pass out wide every now and again. It's not good enough though is it. You are living off your past alone. If you were Brett Pitman, you would be getting palters every week.

I just want to clarify, obviously Charlie Austin is not the underlying problem at this football club, but if his influence is so significant that he is unjustifiably staying on the football pitch then I'd rather he was gone thanks. His time here has been a complete disaster.

And I don’t mean it was the worst Swindon performance I have ever seen; more that the combined sum of the 2 teams was so poor. Highlights - First 15/20 minutes, Drinan's goal

The rest - appalling. I think Paul Bodin summed it up best when he basically said our tactic appeared to be to line 6 players up near the penalty area and get the defenders to smash the ball forward more in hope than expectation. I know some get wound up about tippy tappy football, but surely you have to have some kind of balance rather than a tactic that looks very easy to defend against. Very bad night at the office.

There was still a sizable portion of people clapping the players off last night, absolutely incredible. Not quite sure what sort of performance it would take to change that.

There were pockets of anger from DRS aimed at the players after the game but mostly apathy.

Don't know where we go from here. Lowest I've felt supporting this club.

For me the bit that makes me most angry is that fans who have been following the club for 40, 50 or more years such as Posh, Banbury, Myself and many others are at a stage where we genuinely dont care about whats going on in matches any more.

Of course we care but we care about the state of the club not about the players and manager etc, they could genuinely all fuck off now and I wouldnt shed a tear from the very top to the very bottom.

I am getting to a point that I cant even be bothered to watch games online even, I lose interest early on after getting mildly interested, I still watch but dont even cheer when we score and just shrug my shoulders when we concede and as for losing...it doesnt even upset me now.

Thats only the 2nd time in my 50 years of following Swindon that I have felt this way, the other was under Captain of the Titanic Sheridan, I have a similar feeling with Gunning in charge.

Hes blatantly not a tactician, he makes awful subs, the players run around like headless chickens under his orders, its an absolute shambles on and off the pitch.

Yes Accrington scored an absolute worldy and Devoy gave away the softest of penalties that cost us any points but after the first 30 mins we barely looked threatening on their goal and every time they attacked (which wasnt much) we looked capabale of conceding again, and Accrington genuinely were terrible, so what does that make us? other than an absolute laughing stock.

Last night's on field show seemed to sum thing up off the pitch pretty well.

Everything seems disjointed, everything seems lackadaisical, everything seems 'shrug of the shoulders'. If you look at the club holistically, from Clem down, the whole place is pretty much a mess. Where is the long term thinking and planning, how does the owner expect fans to bond with the players if we're using the place as a rehabilitation clinic and a revolving door to cash in on any talent at the first opportunity? I'm sorry, but Clem's rant about SWINDON SHOULD BE A FUCKING CHAMPIONSHIP CLUB at the Fans forum was absolute hot piss steam in a busy urinal. The stadium is crumbling (despite us seemingly having spent a fortune on repairs), god only knows how many of these players are here to build something next season or if they even want to and we have an interim rookie manager with barely any support staff who appears to have the tactic book of an excited gung ho teenager that believes that packing as many attacking players on the pitch at one time is going to be a recipe for success.

Look at how Steve Cotterill has turned FGR around. An experienced lower league manager having a bloody good go at keeping them up. What do we do, chuck Clem's patsy into the dugout. Frankly the results speak for themselves, 18th in League 2. How's Clem going to spin selling ST's now after last season's propoganda?

That, for me was the most depressing game of Gunning's spell so far. Yes we played some good football for the first 30 minutes but second half from minute 46 was the first time during Gunning's latest stint that the players,Austin apart showed a complete lack of desire and commitment . I've tried to see positives and to be fair,in all of his games there has been some on the field even during our defeats but once the equaliser went in it was inevitable we'd lose. 30 points dropped from winning positions is unbelievable and that includes many Flynn games

Have you heard anything more on this since the match? Hopefully the low quality showing didn’t put them off! I did spot one quite smartly dressed person in the DRS near to where you said they would be sitting…

Poor quality football I know but, for the want of a bit of luck going our way that usually goes against us, we could have been moaning about shit quality AND 3 points.

How often has pinball in our defensive area ended up with the ball deflecting into our goal?
How often last night did some Accrington Fookin Stanley midfielder or defender come twixt the strike of the ball and their goal and the ball deflect wide or away to safety?

All I'd say is that any consortium's that are serious about taking over the club are going to keep their business very much in house. I've heard whispers that there are 1 or 2 who have been working behind the scenes but I've absolutely no clue of details/timescales etc.

Personally I'd take any wild fan rumours with a huge sack of sea salt, regardless of how desperately we want it to happen. My inkling is that the issues are probably not with any buyers, but with Billy Smart and Co that are the current incumbents at SN1

Absolutely, there are interested parties for certain so any delay will be with the current owners of our club and not the potential buyers.

but with Billy Smart and Co that are the current incumbents at SN1
STFC board meeting.

Are there?

You've clearly made up your mind that nobody would be interested in such a car crash of a football club so I'm not really sure why you continue to ask tbh.

…because clearly everyone knows of this queue of people.
I’d like to see some proof but I’m sure that won’t be forthcoming for reasons.

Of course not everyone knows, and nobody said there is a queue and if there was proof available to show then it might as well be on the back page of the Adver.  People have connections and people talk in the background, just because you haven't heard them doesn't mean they don't exist.  I am aware of 3 parties that were interested in the past so I have no doubt there are current interested parties now.  I can't provide proof of those 3 interested parties, but i heard enough from people I trust to know that they were real.  Because I can't provide proof, does that mean i am bullshitting?

Exactly this.

It would be interesting to know if the door is shut in the face of any interested parties, or whether the club is willing to talk.

We’re fucked if they won’t talk, because it would suggest that they’re either very happy with how things are going, or can’t let anyone else lift the lid on the money flows through the club.s

No idea what JoeMezz was up to. Was he describing Crawley applied to us to point out something or other?!

I think one more win should see us safe?

We can surely do at least  that. Or 3 draws. that's good too
