Here goes. I'll start the ball rolling with The Evening Star in Brighton. Tucked away just down the road from the station. Cracking selection of ales, craft beers & ciders, nice ambience, friendly staff & great background music. About to partake in a pint of Sonic Titan cider. :beers: Title: Re: Favourite pubs - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. Great range of interesting craft beers and more up my street in the Pale Ale range as more refreshing and less hoppy. (I'm sure they had some more hoppy stuff) The place is slap bang next to the principality stadium so I imagine gets rammed when internationals are on.

Post by: Wobbly Bob on Friday, July 19, 2024, 16:46:42 Aye. Sheffield Tap, too. Then take a stroll to the Rutland Arms. Yeah, Sheffield Tap last year ahead of a gig at The Leadmill. Hopefully a visit to the Rutland Arms if the Blades implode in the near future. Unlikely at this time but Sheffield is a fine drinking city. Have developed a liking for micro pubs, which could well be the future for community drinking & socials as more pubs go under. Yet to see one with a bad review. Post by: Wobbly Bob on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, 17:03:27 This could go in any number of threads, but a shout out for The Black Toad in Hoylake.
Great selection of craft ales & surviving not far from a spoons. Speaking of which, have visited 4 Merseyside spoons today of which 3 have served the very wonderful Wobbly Bob, the beer that is. Not good for the very early getaway tomorrow morning but can only picture the predominantly senior locals up on the tables at closing time in The Hoylake Lights after an evening on the WB's. Currently in The Brass Balance in Birkenhead. Love this place for a proper gritty insight into local life. Fully prepared for a cracking away day to be spoiled by the main reason for being here. It's a small place that serves kind of smaller dishes. The food was really varied and enjoyable. Worth a visit if you want to take the other half for a decent meal out.
Also what i thought coming away from Swindon earlier today was how the Old Town area is so impressive, and then you walk into town (we stayed at the Premier Inn in the centre) and it's such a zombie horror show. Not far from the tube station. Adjacent I think :hmmm: Smallish pub, but always found it pretty reasonable priced for a pub right in the thick of the nodnoL smoke. Also allows doggos. Ludlow is well worth a visit. Good selection of pubs & the incessant advance of fast food outlets has been successfully resisted in the main, so far. Defeat, I fear, will sadly be inevitable. I've got a long list already, but just in case I missed anything. Tynecastle Arms if your in Gorgie, or if you are unfortunate to be in Leith, the Cabbage and Ribs! I used to live at the bottom of Leith Walk and there was a real rank affair down there, I was always too scared to set foot in it. Id imagine the toilets were like the trainspotting ones! Unfortunately I've not been to Edinburgh for ages, but if you head along Rose Street, which runs parallel behind Princes Street you've got the Oxford and Cambridge bars, made 'famous' by Rebus. The only pub ive been to in Glasgow was before a Celtic Champions League game. It was called Turnstyles and had bars on the windows. You could get 660ml bottles of Tennants for a couple of quid. Again, this was ages ago and as a tourist, probably wouldn't recommend it! Sorry ive not been a huge help! Title: Re: Favourite pubs - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. Booking is proving a bit problematic, though I think they do walk ins. They do now do walk ups, my mate went there last week, 2 seperate queues, bookings and non bookings, £7.20 a pint though is a bit excessive for his own local brewed beer.Title: Re: Favourite pubs - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. They do, you will queue for ages though Title: Re: Favourite pubs - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. Post by: Batch on Friday, July 4, 2025, 10:16:02 Yeah that's why we've not been :)
Title: Re: Favourite pubs - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. Post by: donkey on Friday, July 4, 2025, 10:20:30 What kind of bars are you looking for out of interest? Im in a Hearts WhatsApp group so happy to get some recommendations from the locals for Edinburgh if you like? Real ale pubs and ones with history of interesting decor. We're better served for Edinburgh than Glasgow, but I think Edinburgh is better served than Glasgow anyway. I know the Cafe Royal and the Guildford, for example, and like those. Title: Re: Favourite pubs - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. Post by: horlock07 on Friday, July 4, 2025, 10:24:37 Anyone been to Clarksons pub The Farmers Dog. Nope, grew up a (long) stones throw from there and had our 6th form leavers do back when it was a restaurant (its never been a pub before despite what the papers and Clarkson claim! Its not in fucking Burford neither!!). Seen a few reviews saying its OK if you like queuing and getting assaulted by the prices in a farm shop! They do now do walk ups, my mate went there last week, 2 seperate queues, bookings and non bookings, £7.20 a pint though is a bit excessive for his own local brewed beer. Pretty much par for the course, saw a piece last week which suggested that average pint prices in Witney were the highest in the Country, even higher than London! For me though its that he brews his own beer, its his own pub and its got about 5 miles distribution distance. Its milking the masses though, something Jezza is pretty good at. Not much to see, but a reasonable amount to drink given that's about 3.5 pub pints Title: Re: Favourite pubs - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. Ah misinterpreted you post so I've deleted and will start again.... :D Its not a pub though is it, its a tourist attraction, albeit god knows why, and they always come with a premium, and in his defence, come on its at least 15 miles to Bourton (where he bought someone else’s brewery) from this place ;) What actually surprises me is why TVP don't whack a patrol car on Asthall Barrow roundabout permanently as its a pub users can only ever drive to, possibly a pretty handy source of convictions. Each to their own anyway, if you go hope you enjoy it! Title: Re: Favourite pubs - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. Post by: Sippo on Friday, July 4, 2025, 10:59:03 £6 a pint in Hop Inn.

Title: Re: Favourite pubs - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere. Post by: Wormholes of Time on Sunday, July 6, 2025, 09:05:06 I'm hoping for a good season with a good few visits to the Gluepot. As part of my funding from the GWR, I've written this about the pub: https://radicalstroud.co.uk/the-gluepot-in-the-railway-village-in-swindon/

Born in Oxford, brought up Witney/Burford way, left home at 18 moved to Newcastle and bar a brief 5 months return to work in that London, commuting from Charlbury, never moved back. |
