I fancy Austin to score Saturday. Much tougher opponent than Sutton so lets try not to ship 3 goals in this one.

Walsalls win at Salford on Saturday was their first in in the league in the calendar year of 2023, thier last away win previously was at Swindon on Boxing Day.

As of today they have sold 353 tickets. So should be around 500 - double what anyone else has this season, although still nothing to shout about being about 80 miles away.

Itís a while since I really looked forward to matchdays but Flynn has got us rocking. No doubt heíll be wanting to stuff his old team.

Should be 9000+ to witness a piece of piss, 4-1.

Got the buzz for this one. Should be a half decent away support and a stern test on the pitch.

Bring it on!

Walsall are shit away and never travel to Town in many numbers, other than for the promotion decider under Sturrock.

Last 4 games at the CG they have averaged just 346 for each game. Likely to be the same this time give or take a few, doubt they will bring near 500.

They are in 9th place but they are unbeaten in 4 league games, they have scored 11 and conceded 11 and on 11 points.

Walsall have only 1 away win (Salford on Saturday) since their last away win at Swindon on Boxing day last year.

Their top scorer is on just 2 goals but with 4 players on 2 goals each.

We are in 5th place unbeaten in our last 7 league games, we have scored 20 and conceded 11 so far.

Our top scorer is the top goalscorer in all English leagues on 9 goals, 2 higher than the next highest scorer in England. We have Kemp on 6 goals who is equal 3rd highest scorer in the English leagues.

Their results so far this season....

Morecambe 2-1 Walsall
Blackburn 4-3 Walsall *EFLC
Walsall 2-1 Stockport
Wrexham 4-2 Walsall
Crewe 2-2 Walsall
Walsall 2-3 Brighton U21 *EFLT
Walsall 1-1 Grimsby
Walsall 1-0 Colchester
Salford 1-2 Walsall

Walsall have won 2 times in the last 11 meetings at the County Ground, Town winning 4.
Walsall have won 7 times in the last 33 meetings at the County Ground, Town winning 13.

Our biggest wins were 5-0 in 2022 and 5-0 in 1927, Walsalls biggest wins at the CG were 1-4 wins 2000 and 1939.

In all games between the us at the CG Swindon have won 24 games, 15 draws and 14 defeats, Town scoring 105 and Walsall scoring 75 goals.

In all games between the clubs at both venues Swindon have won 39 of the 105 games, 30 draws and 36 defeats with Town scoring 159 goals and Walsall scored 155 goals.

Could go either way.

It genuinely surprised me too.

The stat that was also a shocker was that we have scored more goals in the first 6 games of the season that any other team outside of the Premier League since the formation of the Championship in 2004, bearing in mind that included a 0-0 draw!

Yeah, think it was Aud that posted an image of that stat (well, that us, City, Arsenal, Utd and Chelsea (spit) have scored 20 in the first 6 of the season) in the Sutton MDT, that one of them is a blank is outrageous, good times.

Edit: Ah, you found the image :)

One of the first games I remember going to following town, still have one of them dodgy souvenir flags. IIRC pitch invasions were taken in turns that day? Could be wrong.
Yes- I have a baby sentence in supporting/following town compared to most.

Hopefully we dick them and keep this run going.

Walsall views on the upcoming fixture.

https://upthesaddlers.com/t/swindon-town-a-league-two-sat-16th-sept-3pm/10480

Might be best to check their stats, Kinsella is still a couple of weeks away from fitness so is a 99.99% chance of missing the game. Unless Flynn was being deliberately obstructive, we have Khan back and will probably play him instead of Cain, although Cain did well on Saturday Khan is a bigger influence on the game IMO.

They recon they have sold 450 so far, interesting.

Anyone would think they are travelling from Poland.
To be fair have a soft spot for the Yam Yams as used to work in the area mainly with Wolves and Baggies fans. Some cracking stories on the piss with some of them.

I kid you not once went to Wolves v Swindon Corporate, the West Brom lads supporting us.
I was so pissed I had double vision and never seen so many players on the pitch.
I think we lost 1-0.

The Grove is now a Miller and Carter restaurant. We used to also utilise the Grove, have a couple of pints and leave the car in their car park. Miller & Carter do a decent lunch menu (used to be something like 2/3 courses for £xx) so we used to get a bite and then leave the car there before walking to the ground. That's a couple of seasons back now, so not sure of the current situation but I think if you buy something there, they don't bother if you leave your car there for football.

It is pretty shit considering the distance.

I would say that this season only Gills, Notts County, Wrexham, AFC Wimbledon, Grimsby, Bradford, and Stockport will bring more than that and MKD, Newport and possibly Mansfield may bring about the same amount.

Thats 10 clubs that will bring more than 400, so many use the excuse that the cost (£27) is way too much for L2 football.

Which I agree it is, but we are by no means the only club with tickets at that level so its a fucking lame excuse as at least they have a seat and it has a good elevated view and covered from the elements which 50% of the clubs in this league do not have.

They should make the middle third 27 and the flanks back to 25. Crowds have dropped by 1k, so the price hike has probably meant a loss in ticket revenue.

I think that was tried in the early days of the new stand.
People ended up buying the cheaper tickets then migrated to empty seats in the central areas.

Pretty much everything has gone up in price but so have wages.
Cost of living crisis is more of an agenda than a reality these days.

Attendances have held up very well.

Any idea how much it would be for 2x adults, 1x10 year old, 1x6 year old and which option i choose?

Pathetic Jobsworth people.

Hereís the best bit. After fifteen minutes I drive round the back of the CGH onto county road and back round and parked in front of the barrier, back far enough for those hoards of Ďspecialí ST car park holders who will rock up while Iím in their way. Then he waved me forward and opened the barrier at 10.47. So he made me wait about 15 minutes in which time three fucking cars had turned up, yes three. So in fact I was truly surprised. Got my tickets and now back home watching bangers and cash feeling rather smug at myself for not losing it. Jesus, you can understand in this day and age why people do get angry very quickly. weird, think you got unlucky because they have let me do just that the last 2 times (once this season to get away shirts).

I know it's not the point but Tesco is an option

Mate I do it all the time, first time Iíve encountered this fukwit, or that level of jobsworthery. So just remember the ticket office is not open until 11.00 Actually I think it is the club shop thatís not open until 11.00 because I got my tickets from the one of the three windows way before 11.00 as it turns out.

If you know, you know #Whitbury-Newtown Leisure Centre.

They are a bitter lot on that saddlers forum, aren't they?
Fuck yeah, bunch of inbred Dingle fucking cunts.

Quote from: Walsall Forum
FK me popped on the Swindon forum youíd think they were a recently relegated Prem side, moaning about how many we are bringing. We could only dream of having the catchment and home support they get but such is where we are located.
% of home support who go away is no doubt the same if not higher. Bout 600 there is like them bringing over a thousand here.
Ridiculously high and mighty for a club weíve mixed with on and off for years and years

Boring as fook, odd club who are mixing it in the basement the same as us at the end of the day. Iíd pipe down.

Best they just stick to cheating, itís what they are good at.

Iíve come across some Ďspecialí Swindle fans on social media in the past. They have a high opinion of themselves, which is fair enough I guess, but as you say they are slumming it with us.
Our away support is class even through some of the shittest of times for us

They just might be the biggest attendance nonces of the lot, these. They think everyone outside of Swindon sees them as some massive club but in reality, no one does. All Swindon is to me is a club constantly riddled with debt looking to scramble itís way out of.

Yep always been a well supported club (but never classed as big tbh) much like the two bristols but thereís not a fat lot of competition round there so they should be pulling decent gates.

They said the same about our support last year like a broken record could understand it more coming from a side such as Bradford but them? get fooked.

With walk ups there will probably be 600+ Walsall fans there tomorrow. Plenty of times Iíve been to Swindon where itís been below 400, so itís absolutely fine considering our home support and generally woeful away record in 2023.
Thatís without mentioning the ludicrous ticket prices.

Weíve got this
Simple away win
For those going today, remember look up when Swindon have the ball

They took just over 700 to Doncaster last game and they have sold 400 so far for their trip to morecambe next weekend. Theyíre hardly massive are they? Letís see how many they take to Crewe for £27

Flynns current CV is the most fourth division ever. I think this is his sixth successive season trying to get a side up and out of this league. I hope for him the human being he does it one day - just not with this lot. Swindlers.

Bunch of sados who obsess over atendance statistice to delude themselves into thinking their more than just a bog standard lower league club like everyone else.

Agree with all the people that canít stand Swindon though. Iíve never known a fan base so obsessed with attendances, especially when their ground is less than half empty every week.

They are one of the wankiest clubs in the country.

£27 is a joke. Ours are £23 for away fans which is also too expensive, but they do have a family deal for Kids for an extra £2 for some games. Anyway just landed in Swindon, makes Walsall (which thankfully I left a few years ago) look like Mayfair

Vile football club

Glad to be ahead. Charlie back in the goals bodes well.

Some really careless passing from us when we have won the ball back near our own box. Most of Walsallís best bits coming from us. A mix of poor decision making and poor execution.

After the first 15, they have defended the centre of the pitch well, we need to try to get Kemp on the ball more, he looks threatening every time he gets the ball.

Khan on a yellow feels like a slight worry for the 2nd half.

Dare I say it - apart from maybe a 5 minute spell in the middle of the first half that felt umm comfortable.

It was like driving up a hill. We dropped down a gear so didnít attack as much but the lower gear got the job done comfortably and probably more comfortably than the higher gear would have.

Very tidy start to the season.

Actually thought a good number of ours were underperforming today. Second half was better generally, way less sloppy on the ball. Still if that was below par from us, then we must be a pretty good side.

The red killed it for them, we looked very comfortable from then on.

Very assured performance, that. The red card helped but we didn't really look like conceding. Much more restraint shown by the outside CBs this week and hey presto Brewitt looked much better for it too. I still think he's too slow but did well today.

The front players are really good. Great movement, good hold up play - any one of them could score every week.

We had to work more for that one but that is no bad thing as will need more performances like that as we get into autumn and winter.

Walsall are a typical big, physical League 2 side but had enough about them especially their No 8, so good to learn how to beat those sides. Bit of the fox in the box from Chas for the first goal.

For me, that was the most satisfying result/performance. Much more mature and none if that kamikaze madness. For the first time in ages I never felt there was an impending disaster waiting to happen.

Brewitt had a particularly good game. Young off it, Khan off it, the rest very good. They didnít look a bad side but had little to offer up top. As per, the ref made a few strange decisions - none more so than stopping the game so the ball girl behind the TE could shift the plastic blue ball holder thingy a couple of yards to the right.

My 28/1 is looking very nice atm!

There was nothing there at all. Thames Water said it would be Tuesday before things were back to normal. I parked in and around Euclid Street and walked to The Merlin. Not a fan of queuing in a line to get served, mind. Much better with a scrum at the bar and use your elbows.

Agree that it was the most satisfying win yet. Played with a calm authority at times, against a well-organised side and we showed we can win without Kemp and Young firing on all cylinders. A better atmosphere (in the 2nd half) for a while too. Poor Joe Acklam got it with both barrels from Flynn, which was a bit oddÖ

I thought Farquarson looked solid and mobile for them - not surprised we were interested (if we were). McEachran, FBT, Brewitt, Hutton and Austin for a cracking header, all get credit.

That was a bit good. Wasn't it?.

Did we look absolutely solid and composed at all times? Did we fuck! But we kept another clean sheet and that is very important.

Austin got his goal while Young looked ineffective. Honestly i think it's a case of defenders attention. Austin has been brilliant this season without getting the goals and today it was Youngs turn to do a bit of donkey work for a change. All In all, this is the closest I've seen to a Parkin and Monloney combo since Doyle and Yates.

As for Walsall. Bunch of fucking mongs for fans. Fuck off back to yam yam land clutching your pearls over £1 sterling and your overall shite support. See you in March or whenever we play you when our away following will be worth talking about.

Very Satisfying win. Clean sheet & defence played very well imo, FBT and Brewitt won everything. Keeper couple good saves also. Midfield the only thing Iím not fully sold on atm- easy to get through it, but thought Mceachran and Khan were very good second half. Young and Kemp way off it today, but good we can still win without them two contributing. Austin deserved his goal and RHM grabs another. Farquharson and no 8 very good for them. Fans very good today - could tell atmosphere helped in passages of play. Shite turnout from Walsall. Onwards and upwards. Michael Flynn is the man- great talker.

Genuinely think today was the best atmosphere since Man City at home.

Was at the Stratton bank end of DRS first half and couldn't believe the sound coming from the Town End and then quickly realised it was so loud because the other end of the DRS were joining in.

Even the Arkells joined in once!

That's us at the back doing our bit, next to the away end.

Really liked the ref today.
Didn't buy into the 'going to ground' by either team.
Would love to see him referee the Gillingham/Jonny Williams match.
Sending off was unlucky.

Saddler walked straight past Flynn and didnít shake hands.
Walsall fans certainly not convinced by him so far.

They reckon it was more likely Flynn didnít want to shake hands. They think Sadler had something to do with his sacking so he could take over.

Forgot. Another nice cameo from Shade.

Yep. The DRS was rocking on occasion. Definitely helped the players.

We put the TE to shame as per usual.😘
We had it rocking up there at the Back, getting more and more joining in.

You know when things are brighter on the pitch when you select preference of scorers.
Wakeling would be down to 5th in the pecking order right now which on the face of it looks good business. Clearly if we use the funds to strengthen.
Why not as the Edwards wage  offer was not cheap.

How wound be he be 5th choice when we only have 3 strikers?
On current form - heíd be 4th choice right now, granted.

RHM has a bad injury record and Young will be gone in January. So he could/would potentially be 2nd choice in a few months.

I guess we will seeÖ.in a few months timeÖ

The routine win we've all been hoping for but weren't sure that the team was capable of?

Was expecting a bit more from Walsall, but the clean sheet was never really under threat and they weren't good enough to exploit the space from the limited opportunities to counter.

The glaring individual errors from last season have largely been eliminated (so far), so the game plan of sitting back & waiting for us to make a mistake might need a rethink on whiteboards up and down the country.

last year the te sounded weak from the drs.

can only conclude I'm really loud at singing and everyone else are church mice

Agree last season the DRS very quiet.
Yesterday the loudest for some time. The TE sadly is very quiet.
Maybe in time to come with a developed TE (😞) we can get an end bouncing like Wrexham.

I read that too. If you watch the footage on YouTube saddler walks onto the pitch before Flynn even has a chance.
Anyways. Shaping up nicely.

Farquharson from Newport who looked good. DJ was heavily rumoured to have nearly signed but went to Walsall with wages and Flynn loves Daniels who I think was rumoured too.
Theyíre all good players. Flynn and Hatswell so far have shown they can pick a player for sure

Said at the time Danny Johnson had all but agreed to sign for us then Walsall came in with more money (and we tried Harry Smith)

7 games in and seems like it worked out well enough for us.
After January it might look a bit differentÖ

Thatís the fella.
Obviously only ever watch the ones he does when Walsall are playing us but also found his thoughts pre & post match to be extremely fair, non biased & accurate tbh.

There are paid media people who do a much worse job than he does.

A slight negative, I just caught up on the post match interviews and heard Flynn digging out who Iím assuming is the Adver guy for the Austin article.

I was a bit confused at that, not sure that article warranted that reaction but each to their own I guess and he probably felt a need to defend his players.

Title: Re: Swindon Town v Walsall Matchday Thread including moans & groans

The Adver articles today are quite positive about comparing unbeaten starts to other seasons and why we have kept 3 clean sheets in 4.

Maybe if the headline had been 'is Charlie doing too much for the team and not himself?, the context to the article would be better but that doesn't make a good headline.

I think Saturday highlighted how much Charlie does for the team to occupy defenders who mark him closely and take the physical stuff.

Jake Young found that same attention harder on Saturday but we have 3 strikers giving good performances in different ways so bodes well.

Is anyone able to paste what the article about CA actually said? I'm assuming it's basically saying he's being more of a team player which is benefitting the team, but also hindering his goalscoring at the same time? It's not a negative hit piece is it surely?

I assume its this one, I know the Adver journo was defending himself a bit on Twitter the other day about it. https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/sport/23790274.charlie-austin-used-swindon-town/

TBH I thought it was actually a pretty deep researched analytical piece, so really not like the Adver at all!  ;)

Must say seeing and hearing a bit more about the dynamic between Flynn and Sadler at Walsall certainly makes the Gunning exile of the summer a lot easier to understand - if he felt in his previous role that a member of his staff was working against him, it probably makes sense that he wouldn't want someone he doesn't know and who has managerial ambitions around the first team group.
