Title: Transfer deadline day
Post by: Peter Venkman on Friday, September 1, 2023, 10:07:55
May as well start a brand new thread for this, closes at 11pm tonight.

Will we sign anyone?

Will we allow anyone to leave?

Post any deadline day deals for league 2 (and any other of interest) in this thread so it doesnt get lost in the other threads :)

Your starter for 10....

Crewe have signed 20 year old Newcastle United midfielder Joe White on loan for the season.

Stockport sign Wolves defender Alfir Pond on loan for the season.

Expecting a first team departure like Hutton or Khan. Purely to 'balance the books' as both are out of contract at end of season.

He was a previous target for us when Wellens was with us, did fuck all in his last loans at Doncaster and Rochdale though.

Also this from yesterday ;)

We can confirm that striker Andy Carroll has triggered a release clause in his contract to terminate his deal with the Royals with immediate effect.

We would like to thank Andy for his contribution to the club and wish him the very best of luck in his next challenge

Itís mad really.

Manchester United have signed a Spurs player on loan.
Ok, heís a left back and theyíve had two injuries to left backs but are you really telling me Manchester United donít have another 7 left backs on their books probably between their U23 and U16.

Sure, they might not be ready for Premier League football but why even bother with the system if when players get injured youíre just going to bring in loan players rather than use your academy players.

Blah, blah, blah never happen money Ďn all that but there should be tighter restrictions on squad size & number of home grown players that canít be exploited by 40 year old shit keepers and foreign born players who the club signed aged 12 counting as home grown because theyíve been in the U.K. for three years.

Also, windows shutting after the season has started is fucking stupid. Window should be still the start of August.

Not a random left back they donít appear to be particularly fussed by.

I'd be surprised if we didn't get 2 in at least - see the its suggested in the pre match presser 1 may go out for game time, wonder if that is Shade or Cain.

I would expect some of the young lads may go out after the window has closed to non league teams for experience, surprised if Brann does not end up somewhere, although probably more difficult to place an inexperienced keeper

I reckon by the time the window SLAMS shut we'll have seen three or four out and two in:

OUT

Wakeling - Loan
Youth/Brann - Dev Loan
Hutton and Khan - Sold

IN

Edwards - Perm 1+1 option
Debrah -   Perm 2+1 option

Poss Kemp/Young made perm too with 2+1 option

Yeah but 2 in with poss 2 being made into perms would be fitting in line with Flynn saying he wants four. Maybe not Debbie then but someone in a similar position.

I think the three or four going out seems realistic {Wakeling loan seems sensible and we recall him in Jan and asses, Brann/Youth dev loan speaks for itself and one of Hutton/Khan  seems like the only viable ''for money'' assets that Town could sell right now}, even if Hutton hasn't hit the ground running, his stock will still be based somewhat on his contributions last season - whereas Kahn will have suitors as they'll have noticed how he's adapted from NL to FL, got rid of his hasty temperament and probably could do a job a league up.

Will be an interesting 5/6hrs for sure - or in true Town style, nothing much will happen  :D

Re: Kahnís rumoured departure. Iíd like to think, though in time honoured tradition I have not read back. HTH 😉 That Mr. Flynn would a) have access to said funds coming in b) be aware that no sensible offer would be turned down for him ( or anyone else) c) have a contingency plan to not only negate said departure but be in a position to improve the whole squad set up as a result of incoming funds d) be assured that funds are or will be made available in January to improve the squad for the second half of the season e) be aware that last season was the biggest clusterfuck/own goal in terms of management AND player recruitment seen for a long time f) realise that this is in a way a shit or bust season for an under performing giant in L2

So far I have been impressed with what I have seen. Yes we need a bit more beef in certain areas but there is a little shiver down my spine that reminds me of the Hoddle team donít worry about out letting in goals because by fuck weíll score more anyway. That worked until he fucked off of course and left us with Mr. Nice in the PL.

If any of the above apart from the dev loan & possibly Young on a permanent happen then I would be more than happy, along with the rest of the TEF to let it all hang out on a naturist break in Derbyshire.

Hoping that we can at least fill the last loan spot.

Ryan Whelan:

Update. Not a lot happening. Wouldn't hold your breath.

The proposed departure hasn't had the interest needed at this stage and time is fast running out.

One potential incoming target isn't window bound so not as much of a rush, but... a departure could help out to free up some space in the squad.

Then to see him dropping down to Derby looking incredibly old then retiring to take up management all whilst being younger than me was my first real football related Ďfuck, Iím oldí

Tbf Rooney looks about 54. Not really a fair bloke to judge anything on.

Weirdly Jody Morris being here as a manager made me feel old. He was a perennial next big thing when I was growing up and getting obsessed with football back in the day.

Yeah that's a good one.

So 1 out.

Wakeling.  21 years old.  Sold ("undisclosed fee").

Disappointed at this juncture, esp. given Austin's age and Young's "recallability".

However, right now, with Rush alongside those 2, I guess If we gain a central defender/defensive midfielder, that could prove worthwhile.

No commitment upstairs to promotion with such a thin squad, given the effects of routine injuries and suspensions.

We can still put out a talented match day squad for now and I can certainly get behind them all and Flynn & coaches.

To get a fee yet again for a player who lets be honest hasnít been pulling up trees is good business.  I was more worried about losing RHM, Khan or Hutton so am relieved.  I guess shade scoring on Saturday was enough to convince Flynn that RHM, Young, Austin and Shade will do up top.

Shame nobody inbound but in current financial state no major damage this window.

Well, yeah but also the point of that system is put a % back into the playing squad on another youngster to keep the production line going.

Not sell them at the end of window and bring fuck all in.

Plus, as I keep saying - sometimes in this situation it is worth holding onto the player because his value / worth might increase. Yes itís a gamble but we can still sell our young players on for profit without just accepting the first bid we get.

It matters not whether Wakeling is rated or not, we have not strengthened and are weaker.
A transfer window after the Manager publicly stated he wanted 2 to 3 additions. Can only hope this is in preparation to get another non contract defender in and across the line.

More questions than ever not getting answered around the club ownership, Standing pulling the strings, has been since dot.

Very poor transfer window, only hope is that there will be a few free transfers available. As said the manager said he wanted 2/3 new players and saw 1 go out the door with no reinforcements. The frustrating thing is that we have a good manager, the quality of player in our squad is better than last year but so thin 1 or 2 injuries and weíre struggling. Not a manager to piss off as for me heís the best weíve had since Wellens, letís hope we can stay relatively injury free and stay up there until January!

You'd think that with a small squad and with no obvious big earners (except Austin possibly) and getting gates of 8,000-9,000, we might hopefully be able to clear the debt by the end of the season. Donít disagree with the view, but none of us know how negotiations went. The final offer may have been very different to the opening one.

I think the timing of this has impacted sentiment. If we sold to Posh 2 weeks ago, the outlook would be much more positive. From what we have seen, he is not at the forefront of Flynnís plans. The idea (not yours) that we should only sell if we can immediately find a replacement doesnít quite make sense in this case either.

Probably the biggest impact of the sale will be more senior minutes, more quickly for Kanu.

All that said. We are worryingly light in midfield and at he back. I hope we can find some quality free agents, and can win today, without any injuries!

A club like ours has to sell, and if we can get a decent fee and a sell on for a bit part striker, Iím happy with that aspect. I just wish things would stop being undisclosed.

I do, however, take issue with the overall composition of our squad and lack of cover almost all over the pitch. I hope weíve just been shit at recruitment, rather than Flynn being missold what budget he had at his disposal.

Go back to the deadline day moves of the early 90's...Shearer to Blackburn, 'replaced' with Terry Gibson (heartbreaking)
Kerslake to Leeds...we had Summerbee to replace him (more luck than judgement I suspect) but Hoddle has said since that this was the point at which he first started to think he needed to move on from Swindon
Fjortoft to Boro...replaced by...nobody

We've just come full circle - at least Wakeling isn't as important to the side as those mentioned above were.

Understand what you are trying to say here...

However, its about when you cash in. Wakelin was a good potential to improve at that is obviously why Peterboro purchased.

The current investors (Morfuni is clearly not the only one now) and obviously light weights and can't buy any jewels for Flynn to polish and shine for for the future.

In fact Flynn might not have enough quality players to put out a suitable team later in the season when injuries and the like happen to limit the existing group.

The real issue here is as I see it. Is when and not if Flynn gets pissed off and says enough is enough.

Until then... as long as the Town can still perform and play exciting footbal... and keep winning more that they are losing.

That's fine for me.

Apparently the fee is around £300k with a 30% sell on.
If true, and Wakeling develops into a decent striker (which they have a record of doing) heís probably going to sell for in excess of £4m.

Based on that we would get a hefty sell on fee, which we probably wouldnít get on our own.

So from a business point of view a good deal.

The problem is we didnít get the bodies through the door that we all think we need.

Exiled Bob, in answer to your comment.

I agree MF has so far proven that he is a straight talking common sense type of manager who knows what he is talking about. His man management skills seem top shelf

He is somewhat of rare breed of managers that has supplied these skills at the County Ground. I would say not since Danny Williams.

Some may say Wellens or initially Danny Wilson. Don't think so. Both good at talking.

Flynn has proven at Newport that he can talk and walk a good game as well.

For the record, don't think Town will eever attract likes of Ossie Ardilles and Glen Hoddle again.

So my comments are.... Town will need to help Mike Flynn become a very successful manager here before a more go ahead club does.

The problem is we didnít get the bodies through the door that we all think we need.

I thought I was going crazy for a second as I couldnít find this post.
Just quoting it here to show I didnít make the post up ( more for myself than others)

Yeah, probably 300k over 6 years and a 30% sell on fee to be paid in yearly 2% instalments.

The real issue here is as I see it. Is when and not if Flynn gets pissed off and says enough is enough.

Flynn has a lot of control over the transfers. Any issues we've had in the summer are as much down to him as anyone else.

We're definitely not done though, as disappointing as the window was. Not too bothered about Wakeling, he was gonna be a bit part player this season and we got a decent fee for him. I hope he flourishes at Peterborough.

FGR confirm Callum Morton joined them on loan for the season from Salford, agreed before the deadline cut off.

Gills sign ex Charlton free agent keeper Nathan Harvey.

Harrogate agree a fee with Stevenage to sign striker Josh March, a deal rushed through with the Luke Armstrong departure that never happened! a deal agreed on deadline day but not announced until after the deadline.

Junior Tchamadeu has joined Stoke City on a four-year deal from Colchester in a deal said to be worth £1m+ for the Essex club.

Weird how many of these deals were not announced until the day after deadline day.

Tails... interesting comments you make.
Watch MF interview after the Doncaster game when 1st thing he was asked was about transfers and Wakelins exit
He was very unsure of himself. Now Flynn is a good talker and suggest he had to tow the company line.
Just supposed Town needed to find cash and had no intenion of getting any further players in before the deadline day timing had expired.
Make up a dodgy story that we had tried and failed to purchase a player for 6 figures.
Keep the supporters onside...Could be totally wrong. But.....!!!

Don't underestimate the quality of talent in the Australian league... trouble is other clubs are fishing in the same pond.

There are several 18 year olds playing for Adelaide utd that would have similar futures as Young and Wakelin currently

NZ lads have recently been signed up for American teams German leagues and obviously in England

Chances are they will never be good enough to get a work permit unless they have British grandparent.

Sure I read rules were being changed about that to allow a couple of 'foreign' players in the squad who wouldn't normally meet work-permit requirements.

I am sure the Visa rules are pretty lax for such sort of ex Colonies - London's hospitality business would be dead on it's feet without Aussies staffing the bars.

Cant see us being able to offer a suitable wage for any of those players TBH.

Mansfield, Wrexham, Salford and Newport managers have all came out saying they are dipping int the freer transfer pool of players in the coming couple of weeks. Br a lot of competition for all of them, I would think all of those players would comfortably find teams above L2 though (barring maybe high spending Salford, Mansfield and Wrexham

It does seem to happen quite regularly. I wonder what the benefits are for clubs to leave their transfer business so close to the wire that they risk not getting anything done at all. I'm aware that a lot of transfers are like house moves and depend on other transfers happening etc which I guess complicates things but to not get a deal done because of admin or whatever is very sloppy.

Sorry not read back so this might be a repeat but I've heard that the fee for Wakeling was either 200k or 350k. From the sources I heard, it's probably more likely to be the lower amount.

I think given the squad numbers I think we probably need to get 2 in the door quickly, that elusive CB we've apparently been chasing and a forward to take the pressure off of Charlie, who apparently is looking tired from what i've been reading. Given Edwards still hasn't signed for anyone, I imagine his wage demands haven't budged and so we might need to use some of the Wakeling money to get that deal done - assuming it's him we are trying to sign. As for the forward, there are plenty of free agents out there but the longer it's left the longer it takes to get up to speed for match sharpness.

I see that Flynn said we missed out on a L1 player who went elsewhere on deadline day.

I took a look through the deals that matched and if you exclude the young CB's that moved, I would say it was either Declan John LWB went from Bolton to Salford or Ellis Harrison FW Port Vale to MK.

I'd quite like a Steven Fletcher if such a player is cool with starting from the bench 80% of the time, if we had that option off of the bench we'd have beaten Wrexham, forgetting the free kick that wasn't.  Target man to get it up the pitch to, extra height to defend late set plays just aimed at the penalty spot.

I'd even entertain an absolute carthorse who will only ever get on for the last 15 if he's fit for purpose in that role.
