Title: Barrow vs Swindon Town match day thread.
Post by: swindonmaniac on Friday, December 16, 2022, 17:24:58
Anyone interested in this one ??.  Only 15 hours to kick off !!.
No mention of a pitch inspection so presumably warmer up there than down here.  Barrow looking for volunteers to help remove the covers this morning and talking of temperatures above zero tonight.
On current performances not holding my breath and think a point here would be a good result.

They're sounding optimistic.  Covers are off now, anticipating milder weather.

Been above freezing all day today and not supposed to freeze over night, its positively balmy here.

Only thing that may cause issue is we had a sleet shower this morning onto frozen ground which has made things a bit sketchy again.

With trains on strike I can't see us taking many anyway.

3-0 loss with Lindsey declaring he was pleased with the performance as we got into their box on at least 12 occasions - forgetting to mention that we didn't have a shot on target

We're setting off around 09:00.  Pitch inspection 30 mins in to the drive.  Fingers crossed.

Almost exactly 12 months since we were there last time.  Can't possibly be worse than that.

I think we'll win this one. We've been up and down all season (we've had consecutive wins once and consecutive losses once in 25 games) and we've been shit recently. That is the extent of my logic.

Hopefully MacDonald back in defence alongside Brennan allowing FBT to go back to LB. Tough on Lavinier, who looks a good player but is very right footed.

‘ All frost covers have now been removed from the pitch at the SO Legal Stadium, as temperatures are rising.

With a favourable forecast, we remain optimistic for the game's prospects and expect to review conditions again at approximately 9:30am.’

Piece of piss. 1-4

Another victory for Mick Lynch & the forces of darkness.
His level of fanaticism is greater than mine on this occasion.

Tough game today.
An astute managerial appointment by Barrow is to be applauded.
A win would see us go above them.
Looking forward to watching on iFollow, if it goes ahead.
Hopefully not a tale of a shambolic late call off with people well into their journeys.

Suspect pitch will be fine, what may knock it on the head is the rain falling on the cold ground and freezing, roads and pavements here are bloody lethal this morning, as is the A590 (only main road from M6 to Barrow) apparently.

I think strike support is starting to wayn in the tracks. Lynch was very ropey on radio 4 the other day, he's normally quite good

Anyway it's a fook of a long way to go in the form we are in. And because you've not gone we'll win 2-0

Barrows great start to the season has slowed down lately with their last 3 results being 0-5. 2-3, 3-1, 0-1 and 0-1 so 4 defeats in 5.

By comparison we have only won 1 game in 6 with us losing 2 and drawing 3.

Thier top scorer is Josh Gordon on 10 and he is followed by Billy Waters on 7 and Ben Whitfield on 5.

They are managed by ex England manager Peter Wild (England Amputee football team that is) and he has a record of 85 wins from his 183 games as manager, he has won 44.44% of all his games in change of Barrow winning 12 of the 27 games so far.

In the 6 previous meetings between the 2 sides Swindon have won 3 and Barrow 2 with the single draw, Swindon scoring 8 goals and Barrow 5. In games at Barrow its level with 1 win 1 draw and 1 defeat each Town scoring 4 and Barrow 3 times, our only defeat up there coming last season in the 0-2 defeat.

Connections between the clubs.

They have Jordan Stevens there who had an unsuccessful loan spell at Swindon.

We have Remeao Hutton who had a fairly successful season at Barrow playing in almost every game before joining Swindon as well as Jake Wakeling who had a very unsuccessful spell at Barrow only managing 5 games during a 6 month loan spell from Leicester City.

They have midfielder Josh Kay banned for the next 6 games gafter he has been found in breach of FA Rule E3.2, following his sending off during Barrow v Leyton Orient on Saturday 24th September 2022. [Should the comments include a reference to any one or more of a person or person's ethnic origin, colour, race, nationality, faith, gender, sexual orientation or disability, these are considered 'aggravating factors' and FA Rule E3(2) may apply.]

Barrow seem to prefer playing the 4231 formation

Barrow 0-0 Swindon Khan MotM (att: 2,645 with 190 Swindon)

To be fair, if we had this many injuries last year we'd have youth players starting, not just one on the bench. It's a bigger squad, not the depth of quality you might like though of course.

defensively we are totally stuffed through injuries. must be risky playing MacDonald. just unlucky in that department

who else we missing? jephcott, khan and Gladders. That's not quite strong enough in depth in attack.

yeah, defensively we are unlucky. we had cover but it's all broken

I wasn't clear but I mean midfield and attack. surely it's more than 3 out in this positions

It was in response to quags "not a stronger squad".

What I'm getting at is other than defensively I think I agree

@dv, Aguiar on bench.

Considering we have "state of the art" medical facities and team we have way more injuries this term than we have in a long time.

And a real lack of depth of quality all over the squad in pretty much every position.

Hunt
Gladwin
Reed
Davison

I see what you are saying.

I just feel we’ve filled the squad with a lot of average players, and there isn’t much quality. If the players you have listed were injured last season, we’d still have McKirdy, Payne, Barry and Williams on the pitch.

At the moment, we have Williams, and that’s it.

If that makes any sense, I know what I mean.

Yeah that defence is woeful. Midfield not much better. The attack is pretty decent though.

But then you need to include someone like Cooper who was injured.  So either you count him as fit, or someone else comes off your comparison.

Whichever way you cuti it, the best first team we can put out this season is a downgrade and is challenging Flitcrofts for overall quality.

That is still good enough to be around the play offs.  Just rather hoped we were trying to improve.

Barrow do on this showing look possibly the poorest side we have played, they dont press onto us at all as nemo says they are giving us loads of space and we are creating chances too, but, not capitalising on them yet..

Most enjoyable half for ages. Pace of pass, crisp and decisive on a poor pitch, shots and looking dangerous. The midfield is boss in and out of possession in the press.

The only down side is it's only 1-0

Title: Re: Barrow vs Swindon Town match day thread.
Post by: Nemo on Saturday, December 17, 2022, 15:24:34
This feels like a first round FA Cup game, everything from the half a stand to the dodgy pitch to the gap in quality between the two sides in possession. However, we all know how first round FA cup games tend to go for us...

Penalty is funnier every time I watch it back. Properly odd refereeing.

Barrow were almost as bad as Rochdale in that half.  Just let us play.  Still lacking a cutting edge though and surely they won't be as bad second half.  What was Shade doing, idiot.

Overall we are getting a lot of joy by the Midfield 3 being able to play with their heads up facing goal.  Then they are getting sacked in and giving Williams and Hutton loads of space.

The weather played its part but that was a truly atrocious second half with Adeloye adding the icing and cherry on top quality wise.  Blank that from the memory and just bank the win.  Such a poor league, a few additions could at least make the play offs look more secure.

buzzin at the moment - great to get back to winning ways
Christ! Buzzin after that? That was an awful watch in the second half. We should have killed the game and made it 0-3 at half time. Their keeper made a couple of good saves. RHM was unlucky at the end. Odeloye did well to shave off a defender and be through 1 on 1 with the keeper, but had no idea what to do!

1st half Barrow were as poor as any side we have faced, 2nd half they were marginally better but the weather was the leveller, we could and should have won by more except for poor finishing and a few good saves.

Every win counts but Barrow are nowhere near play off candidates on that showing.

Hutton and Lavinier the 2 best players for me. Shade and Williams did well and Reed back to closer to his standard again, FBT did well in defence too and Wakeling lively up front.

Can only beat whats in front of you, and we did.

RHM looked really lively when he came on but oh dear Adeloye had a fantastic 1 on 1 chance to score his first goal and failed miserably taking one too many touches rather than shooting.

Probably fair enough then! Although odd not to put Massey on the bench ahead of him if he travelled with the side?

Interested to know what people thought tactically - to me that looked like Plan A done a bit better rather than any significant changes, but open to being enlightened!

I'm typically an optimistic fan but man I feel so meh after that. In isolation it's a big win and could serve us some huge confidence, but how we didn't score from open play despite our dominance and press in the first half and had to rely on a penalty is a big cause for concern. Defensively I thought we were absolutely fine and a clean sheet deserved, but going forwards still a huge concern.

Plan A with the oppo standing off us completely and a bit more impetus to shoot. Shots welcome but not convinced that this is eveidence of the changes we’d been hoping for. More evidence and a 2nd half without a monsoon, needed.

Apparently he was crying at full time. Seen mental health issues reported (speculation). If so, give some time off ala Ben Stokes. No point playing a player if he has big mental health issues so no point playing him as he is it’ll make things worse

it was a very welcome 3 points.

had we conceded it would have been the same argument, defence was very very isolated from the midfield, barrow had lots of counter attacks in the 2nd half so fair play to a probably fitness rusty mcdonald and fbt for deadling with that especially.

the midfield has big problems in it. i know we have injuries and that isn't our 1st choice but williams, iandolo, reed, darcy is about as lightweight and small as you could possibly get and its proper hard times when league 2 giants are getting balls pumped into them late on.

we are 4th, that's decent, albeit it very inflated due to majority teams having 1 or 2 games in hand. the consequences of losing when no one else is playing would have been massive.

the same worries remain just very relieved that we got the 3 points. is this turning a corner or mean we are going to go on an unbeaten stretch- 100% no but its one tiny step in the right direction.

I think that was a much better attacking performance than recent weeks. We looked like we had a lot more ideas going forwards and we’re unlucky not to have scored more. Plenty of big chances. Austin would have had a hatful today. Very impressed with Lavinier. FBT was excellent again. Hutton back to his earlier high performance levels. Defensively we looked assured too. I don’t know the stats but I feel like this team has probably had more clean sheets already than we did all last season?

The commentators at the time said the miss really showed him lacking confidence. trying to round the keeper is actual quite a confident thing to try.

The pitch was slow and sloppy it really wasn't the worst thing to attempt. at the end of the day he hasn't lost us any points. twitter comments react like he has missed a decisive playoff penalty. he will be better for a goal but to get him that opportunity he's going to need more than a couple of minute cameo it seems.

Early Christmas family day today, so didn’t see/know anything about the game outside of the stats, will have to read back a bit more. Seems like there was a lot more positivity. The win the main thing of course  :beers:, still some concern over the lack of goal threat by the looks of it.

Nice league table in the face of our poor form. Poor Tomi if that’s true, take some time off over Christmas lad, maybe talk to someone for some mental fitness.

Agreed. Just hope the mental health angle isn’t too hard. Anyone struggling mentally would be not the best at their job, football applies. Support should be there and we have to remember they’re human. Let’s hope that he recovers and the support is there as there must have been something there for us to look at him.

Big win. Entire back 4 very solid, FBT the pick.

Reed bossed the game, no shocks what a run of games can do. One of the best midfielders in the league. Williams brilliant. Iandolo battled well.

Horror miss from Adeloye but just as rotten to see our own player “distraught” at end of game after we’ve won. Needs a run of games for confidence and I imagine that won’t come here..?

How on earth are we 4th? 😂. Mad what a win can do. Big January window needed to stay in top 7.

Unreal effort from those that travelled today, more dedicated and more of a fan than most of us 👏.

Great credit to the team for grinding out the result in the 2nd half in difficult conditions.
Not the time to be getting too carried away.

A relatively small, mobile and technical midfield should run rings around opponents in this league if they aren't prepared to deal with it, as was the case in the 1st half yesterday.
Everyone put a shift in and an example of the whole being more than the sum of its parts, which needs to happen on a much more consistent basis if we are going to achieve anything this season.

Possibly Iandolo's best game of the season as well, which is a bonus. Needs to carry on at that same level now.
Maybe some players need a bit more time to settle back in after missing pretty much all of pre season.

I can’t imagine practically bottom of L1 Burton have any better defensive players than FBT.
They’d be stupid not to bring him back and play him.
We’d be the same in their shoes.

Only hope is they are massively over their wage budget and have to ship players out ASAP.

We started so brightly the first 15 to 20 mins, but we started to slip back in to the same old Swindon of late. To have still gone so long without a goal from open play is seriously worrying. The conditions may have played a part though.

I'm glad we got the win, but I clearly don't see it as encouraging as some. We still have so many injuries though.

Shame about Adeloye and his mental state, but as far as I can tell no one is sending him abuse. Its just a very natural response to a player that has shown nothing to say he isn't completely out of his depth here. Would stay off socials at a time like this.

No one is pissed off at him or giving him shit as far as I can see, its more being incredulous that this is what Sandros magic spreadsheet has targeted for us.

I’d say the young man’s attempt to round the keeper smacked of nothing but ill confidence. He simply didn’t seem to know what to do in the one on one, it wasn’t some calculated decision. Feel really bad for him on a human level, but in the cut and thrust of professional sport he just doesn’t seem to have it

Who? Adeloye or Parsons?

I think that SL gives Adeloye the nod because he offers something different to Wakeling and Parsons. He is a big lumps who can mix it up and head the ball (perhaps)

Parsons doesn't look to be as good as Wakeling nor RHM. He also isn't the poacher that Jephcott is.

From what I have seen, unless they improve significantly, neither Adeloye nor Parsons are going to make it

However, I'm not sure that Roberts is much better than Parsons either.

Which are going to improve dramatically? I don't know.

2 starts and 9 subs appearances for a grand total of c. 270 minutes according to http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/PlayingRecord.asp?PersonID=ADELOYET&Season=2022-2023

Worth noting as well that bar once his subs appearances have never been over c.20 minutes.
