Title: Ashley Cole
Post by: Boy About Town on Friday, January 7, 2022, 23:06:35
It’s a shame that Ashley Cole and Eni Aluko had to be racially and homophobically abused at the end of game tonight. It’s very sad. As an Arsenal fan with a not particular like for AC - he was only trying to be a pundit for the ITV coverage, yet a few fans were throwing things and shouting sickening abuse. On what had been a very special occasion it’s a real shame that it ended up with such wankers trying to ruin it. I actually got to speak with AC after and apologise for the behaviour of a mindless few. Unsure if they had to cut in the studio. I know they moved to the centre circle. Disgusting and proper embarrassing.

I heard some abuse, none of it racial or homophobic though?  ???
Arsenal fan? Sorry to hear that.

if that's true it's disgusting.

all I could hear from the DRS was 'shit Kessler Hayden', 'Ashley, you're a cunt' and the Lee Power sex offender song

Me too,  and I was in the TE about 50ft from Mr Cole.

Was it a few individual muppets shouting? Bit strange they put them where they did. No excuses though, crap if that's what happened.

It’ll only take Ashley Cole to tweet about it to put the skids on what otherwise was a memorable occasion. It’s not all of our fan base but instead a pond life few. I did question why the team were plonked in the corner of the DRS/TE

I think there’s a few that follow us that are going to find themselves in a bit of trouble before long. There seems to have been a lot of incidents this season so imagine some are starting to get the attention of the authorities now as it’s almost impossible to do anything in and around grounds these days without getting it picked up on camera.

How many 'fans' were involved?  Was it a group, or a few individuals?  If the latter, hope you took a few pics & reported it.

Morons.

A bit like the two lads that ran onto the pitch at the end. Worth it for the inevitable banning order?

This no excuses but how stupid to put them there.
It was obvious it was going to happen and said before the kick off.
It’s not Sutton Utd with a couple of hundred.

I thought the producers would have learnt from pre-match as there were a few lads giving the hand signals directly behind Ashley Cole which was clearly visible on TV

anyway, the mass chanting at pundits was always going to happen. true enough.. don't much care about it, made me chuckle.

Yeah creating an atmosphere while we're on display for the world to see is one thing, but hurling abuse is another. Un a fucking ceptable

Little shits who got on the pitch and the twats who keep bringing smoke bombs can fuck right off out of the club and never come back as well. Selfish pricks don't fully understand the effect their actions have on the club or fanbase at large. "Oh it's a bit of fun" isn't that fun when it means the rest of the fanbase has reduced ticket allocations, gets shit treatment by police and stewards etc., and the club which is already in a precarious financial situation regarding debts etc. ends up getting fined.

Go support fucking Reading or the Pox you bunch of cockwombles.

I think there was a handful of Arsenal ‘fans’ in the vicinity given the abuse I heard around him being a money grabber.

Bizarre place to put the pundits.

Needless to say, if there was racist abuse I hope the culprits are found and punished.

I assume if we ever get some development it will include boxes, one of which could be used as a studio on such occasions, plus it might release the mythical second concourse in the DRS for such use.

Didn't they used to erect a temp studio on one of the corners of the bank for such occasions (I recall it being showered with coins once) albeit that might not be possible when the bank is fully occupied as last night.

Horlock - Yep, there was a temp studio in the space by the corner of the SB/DR stands for Chelsea in 2013 which didn’t result in the loss of any seats. Perhaps that area has become too dangerous in the following years - I imagine all manner of crap is dumped there.

For other televised matches the pundits have been pitchside near the dugouts.

I wonder whether the location had something to do with logistics, power or what not?

Seemed an odd place to put them, albeit they should be able to put them anywhere without people being pricks.

Club statement released

Quote
Owner Clem Morfuni, on behalf of Swindon Town Football Club, would like to issue the following statement in regards to reports of racial abuse at Friday's game against Manchester City.

During our Emirates FA Cup Third Round Tie against Manchester City at The County Ground, we sadly received reports of racial abuse towards Ashley Cole, who was part of ITV's broadcast team.

We are absolutely saddened and deeply disgusted by this, and we cannot stress strongly enough that racial abuse of any kind will not be tolerated by Swindon Town Football Club.

Racism has no place in the world, and it is incredibly heartbreaking that this still has a place in our game.

We are currently working with Wiltshire Police on gathering evidence, but those responsible will be punished accordingly.

On behalf of everyone at Swindon Town Football Club, we send out our heartfelt apologies to Ashley Cole, and it is with our deepest regret that you had to experience that last night.

Those few individuals do not represent Swindon Town and will not be welcome at The County Ground.

Supt Phil Staynings, on behalf of Wiltshire Police, said: "We are aware that one person was subject to racial abuse at the County Ground following the Swindon Town v Manchester City game last night (07/01).

“We have already commenced an investigation, obtaining statements and securing CCTV. Further enquiries in relation to this incident are ongoing.

“Behaviour of this nature is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Anyone with information should call 101 and quote crime reference number 54220002136.

Either way a ban would be nice. Fuck it, chuck in some prison time too.

I was in the Town End last night, and witnessed the scene at the end with the pundits in the corner, but I can honestly say I didn't hear any rascist abuse at all.

The largish group of fans were all but blocking the exit , making it slow going to get out, so i heard what was going on for a good 10 mins. I enjoyed the usual Swindon chants and anti Oxford songs, but I thought the abuse directed at Cole was cringeworthy, and wouldn't reflect well on the club or the majority of fans.

If there was any rascist abuse then it must have been from and individual as certainly wasn't from the chanting I heard !

The statement states the report of racist abuse was made during the match, so unrelated to the going’s ons post match (I’d assumed it was then too)

Where did Cole and the pundits watch the match from? I’d assume they’d have gone to the back of the Don Rogers

Edit: the police state it was following the match, so contrary to the clubs words, not that it makes much of a difference - just hope the person is caught.

The actions of a few make us look tinpot and backward, cant imagine it will be a positive thing to see for Simpson, Critchlow, KKH, KML. Sad in the 21st Century we still have idiots racially abusing players and ex-players, which reflects adversely on our society, despite the progress we've made. Lifetime ban as others have said.

racism exists everywhere.

I can't know what it is to be black, or even guess at it

i know they are young lads, but our own black players must realise that nearly 100% of the fan base are disgusted at the  few that do this

Trouble is that its hard to tell; even the most thick as pig shit racists must now have twigged that their views arent generally considered acceptable any more; so they probably tend not too express them too openly.

From what I've picked up on here, I would bet it's a local Arsenal fan, not part of the normal Swindon crowd, who took the opportunity to abuse Cole over his transfer to Chelsea.
Not excusing it, just hoping it wasn't a regular Town fan
