Title: The Oculus quest 2 thread
Post by: 4D on Sunday, January 24, 2021, 12:36:51
Can this be done without having to buy a device? I have 2 smart TVs but when trying to cast from the oculus there is no TV option?

I'm not  :)
It's not for me. Just found it easier to cast to phone, then screen share phone to TV.
Tempted to get one for myself.

Very tempted to get one now, it will mean two in the house but hey how.
Population one looks fun.

I've only got 3 games at the moment, but they're enough to keep me entertained for now.

Beat saber
Thrill of the fight (which will definitely help you shed a bit of weight)
VR echo. Which is excellent - and free.

We have Beat Saber and Echo, I could do with the other  :D
Looking to get one for myself so I've been looking into the games. Commanders, Population one and The Walking Dead will be on my list.

Do you find it difficult to keep your balance at times when you make a sudden stop in the game? I've almost ended up on my arse a few times.

Yeah, you have to press the right stick to brake, I hold it down as a tap just slows you a bit. I also grab hold of the objects and use them to stop me and to catapult at people or the disc.

Not much of a deal, though. Only about $3 off. My cash flow's gone a bit wobbly so I have to fix that before I can justify spending money on games.

Get the oculus quest 2, get population one and get a squad together. It really is a good laugh. Was teamed up with a couple of yanks today, then a dog started yapping and the guys missus was in the background bollocking it  :D. All while I was in a gun battle with some French geezers  :)

get population one and get a squad together.

I will get it myself soon and maybe we can link up? I need to get my cash flow back on track first. I'm strict with the wife and kids about dipping into savings so I'd be a bit of a tool if I dipped in myself to buy a game.

Been in agony with my back again today. A couple of days of rest is needed.

I can really feel the difference; my upper body feels so much more toned and tighter than before. My biceps are visibly larger and I didn't think that would happen. I just thought it would help me lose fat (which is also happening). I've lost 3 kilos in 5 weeks and the only change I've made to my diet is swapping 1 pack of crisps a day for fruit. One wonders how much I would have lost if I'd gone on a proper diet regime, but I'm in no rush.

And just from having fun playing games. This has been a great investment - I recommend it to anybody. Especially people who enjoy games and need some exercise. The wife and kids use it as well, it's superb value for what you pay.

What is the web browser like?

I've not used it for browsing, but I expect it would be quite a faff unless there's some kind of virtual keyboard. 'Typing' involves pointing at letters with the whatchamacallit. But I might have missed something.

This is stuff I'll find out when I get bored of the games - which I think is some way away.

Is there no voice recognition to opt for voice command searches? You'd think there would be some form of Alexa/Google tech integrated?

Title: Re: The Oculus quest 2 thread

Do you 'need' to buy the 256gb version?

I did because the extra cost wasn't significant enough.

Do you 'need' it? I suppose it depends on how you use it. I did look this up before I bought it and apparently it's movies and stuff that take up space more so than games. You could probably just uninstall and re-install if needed. One reason I went for the 256gb is with future-proofing in mind. Apps and games are bound to get larger in file size.

There's roller-coaster apps/games and I had to take it off after 30 seconds or so after trying them. I've also nearly fallen over a few times because my brain and balance gets confused. If standard games give you motion sickness then VR might not be for you. But if you get a chance to try one out then you should mate.

You could get one JJ and start out with games that are not too fast and flashy, they rate their games by comfort so you are aware of what to expect. Also, if you buy a game and don't get on with it you can get a refund, as long as it's not ages later and you haven't played it for more than two hours.
The missus has a game called Moss which is viewed in the third person, it's great and doesn't make her feel nauseous, whereas she can feel like that in other games

I have the 64gb version, I think it's enough personally. Games I have are between 330mb and 1.6gb. The system uses a chunk but you could easily have 30+ games on it. More than enough imo.

Maybe best avoided, I got one of these the other day for the kids to use on half term, they think it's great, but I could not use it for more 5 minutes before it started to make me feel nauseous.

I just beat the champion boxing dude on thrill of the fight (on points) for the first time on endurance level.

5 rounds of 3 minutes each and my muscles still feel like jelly. My legs included because there's loads of ducking and weaving involved. A really intense workout, at least for somebody like me.

Time now to start adding more rounds on. Fuck knows how people go the full 12 rounds on VR, let alone in a real ring with some hard bastard actually trying to hurt you.

Pop one is still my go to game.

Being a total novice to this, am I right in saying that this is an all in one console as part of the headset?  i.e. you don't need to connect up to a PC/Console running the games?

If so, based on what you are saying it sounds like it is a worthwhile investment?  I assume the games are downloadable on the headset via wifi..  what is the ball park price of games etc.

Yes. Not all are, but the Occulus Quest is.

what is the ball park price of games etc.

Usually between $15 and $30. Some are a bit more.

FH, buy some Magnesium Spray. Under the tongue, your muscle recovery will improve hugely and be less prone to fatigue. It'll also help improve nerve receptors too. You can make your own by getting Mg flakes and making a solution in distilled water. Whack it in a little spray bottle. Jobby done-ey.

Obviously if on other medication do check first if it is ok for you to use a Magnesium Chloride supplement :)

The quest 2 is £299for the 64gb version, enough for approx 25+ games (we only have around 8 games, so imo the 64gb is fine). You download the oculus app on your phone and you can link PayPal to it and the headset. Games are purchased as downloads, which takes a few minutes.  Prices for games are £5 to £30 and there's always deals on.
Battery lasts around 2 and half hours which is plenty. I have a battery pack I can link which will double that time, but I wouldn't want to be on it for that length of time. You get two hand controllers each take a single AA battery.
Great fun.

I will get Population One, hopefully in the next couple of weeks or so. It's next on my list.

But.

Getting in shape is the main reason I got the kit, so I got fitXR today. Beat sabre is still fun but just isn't giving me the same workout it used to - it's made me that much fitter. I went for fitXR because it's more of a workout than a game.

An hour later and every muscle in my body feels as though it's on fire. I got through so much water as well - it was just coming straight back out of me.

And it's quite fun. Agonizing, excruciating fun.

I finally gave in and got myself a Quest 2 yesterday. I got it mostly to help with my fitness and had high expectations based on what I'd read on this thread and other reviews.
My high expectations have been blown out of the water - I've only got Beat Saber and Thrill of the Fight so far, but as well as being a hell of a workout this thing is also ludicrous amounts of fun.

If anyone else is thinking about getting one then do it, you won't regret it.

Anyone got any other recommendations for games that both work you out and are genuinely fun to play?

Title: Re: The Oculus quest 2 thread
Post by: Flashheart on Sunday, May 2, 2021, 12:01:51
I play fitXR most days - it's more of a workout than a game but definitely does the trick and still quite fun. They've moved to a monthly subscription model recently, but you should get a free trial. Give it a week or two before trying it though because there's still a few things they need to fix after a recent update.

Beat Saber's no longer a workout for me - I hardly break a sweat, but it definitely helped to begin with. I use it as a warm-up now. It's still fun regardless.

There's nothing wrong with it, it's just not my sort of game. I've played similar (like fortnite) on the PC and just didn't fancy it much.

I do like shooter games that you can co-op in, there are others like Hyperdash, Onwards, Contractors etc. I'll have to give Warplanes another go, great graphics/fun. The gin might not have helped me  :D
I went straight into dog fights which are gonna make you dizzy, I think you can also flight sim in it.

I played WWI fighters at the weekend and found the motion a lot easier to handle. It seems you get used to it pretty quickly.

I did 12 rounds on Thrill of the Fight earlier today. I could barely make it past 4 not that long ago. Feeling it now, though.

I did 12 rounds on Thrill of the Fight earlier today. I could barely make it past 4 not that long ago. Feeling it now, though.

Can you two player on Thrill of the fight? I have it, I'll give you a scrap  :)
Eleven (table tennis) is very good too.

I just purchased a quest 2 and had a go today.

Probably should’ve eased myself in. I feel sick as a dog after checking out a roller coaster thing and then playing a mario cart style racer that left me feeling like I’d been on a waltzer.

This is THE reason I can never buy one even though I am interested, my motion sickness just doesn't allow me to.

Games are graded by comfort Bazza. Some make me feel a bit wobbly, most don't.

Thanks, currently quite enjoying Walkabout Mini Golf. Also got Richie’s plank thing as well. That’s amazing.

I'm going to get one of these for the kids for Christmas. Looking at various bundles, the carry case is probably worth the extra but the elite strap has mixed reviews. Anyone got one that think it's worth getting?

I got this one as didn’t like the sound of the durability (and price) of the official one. And for ease of taking and off and on as well as the fit they’re worth their weight on gold (imo).

Thanks both. I think I'll see what the Black Friday deals are like before I pull the trigger.

@ Crackity Jones

Are you on population one? Your name popped up in the lobby last night. Coincidence or you?

A summary of the best deals I can see:

I've just ordered via Very.co.uk. £50 off using code TVGMR.

Currys are offering a £50 voucher which is also on top of the bundle discounts they're doing. Decided I'd buy accessories later if I wanted and probably go third party.

You get a £50 games voucher if you buy directly through the Oculus website.

Top tip:

Buy a silicone face guard. The foam gets well mingy otherwise.

Finally got around to getting one, which was delivered on Wednesday. Bought the boxing game straight away and fought three fights that night, then another two yesterday morning. The outside of my upper arms and my shoulder ades now hurt so I can't even contemplate playing today. It's a good little workout, looking forward to trying some other games.

They come with one now, didn't realise at first as the kids took all of the stuff out of the box and left them lying round.

A cheap bundle for 8 games here, some don't look that great but it includes Zombieland and it's only £13.
